And for the folks who think "oh, there won't be a midterm" or it won't be fair - you know who thinks there will be a fair midterm? Senate and House Republicans. Because they're panic-retiring or heading for state-level elections to avoid the blow-out they think is coming.
At this point, I think some of them are just so burned out by things, that they're saying subtextually that they're just gonna sit the next elections out, it's just that the "there won't even be a midterms" is merely the excuse to mask it. It's already lost to them, so they just don't wanna do it.
That doomer shit is the most effective form of voter suppression. We need to work hard on registration, getting folks IDs, and fighting the GOP suppression and gerrymandering bullshit. Necessary work that won't get done if people have given up.
Tillis and Ernst, specially, are in battleground states and pulled the ripcord pretty clearly because they think they can't win either a primary or a general. The midterms aren't a done deal, but Dem performance in specials has been eye-popping so far - a twenty-point swing in one Iowa district.
The only question that matters is, now are they going to REPRESENT or cave?
Now that's not a done deal and special election electorates aren't the same as general elections (even midterms) but my point is GOP congress critters clearly think the midterms are happening and are beginning to realize that they may have a serious problem.
Right now the polling average for the midterms is D+3; if that holds, Dems would take the house almost regardless of gerrymandering. But if it gets *worse*? At D+6, suddenly seats in OH, IA, TX are in play (and Collins in ME is toast, NC long gone). At D+8, you've probably got the senate.
D+8 or D+9 is a huge reach - not likely currently - but we've just seen special elections come up D+20 and now Ernst - in an R+6 seat as an incumbant! - just bailed out. And she didn't buck Trump, so it wasn't a MAGA primary fear - and if IA is in play, so is TX and OH.
My point being if your opponent is acting like they're vulnerable, it might not be 3-D chess, but because they are, in fact, vulnerable. And if they're acting vulnerable while assuring you they are unstoppable, it is because they are vulnerable - and they think that election is happening.
They know it's going to be awfully difficult to pull off "Dems stole the election" if they are losing deep red House seats and the Texas Senate seat. At some point, even delusional people require credibility to keep up the facade of belief.
The base will buy it even more if those seats flip.

My hot take is I think KS might be in play if we have an environment as blue or bluer than 2018 (8-10) Imagining the psychic damage the GOP would endure if they lost KS, TX, AK, and IA in one night. Would probably change their behavior a bit

The election is in 14 months. Things are going to start to bake in about 9 months. I know that seems like eternity but it’s a blink of an eye. If things don’t start to get much better, fast, they are fucked. And they know it. A real opposition party would start stepping on their necks. Hard.
D+8 would require a catalyst, like an economic catastrophe. Little sign of any such thing. AI bubble popping likely leads to a regular recession. Tariff inflation is bad/stupid/illegal but is about 1% GDP. Firing the Fed boars will probably get shrugged off. No debt ceiling risk near term.
A 'regular recession' could, I think, be very damaging to Trump, because so much of his brand is 'he's good at business' and with the combination of the trade policy, tax bill, federal firings and deportations, he basically owns any outcome, no matter the immediate source.
But I think the other complicating factor here is Trump's own inability in crisis response, which we saw in 2020. Not hard to see a pretty rapid cycle of economic downturn or botched disaster response leading to protests which he cracks down on leading to substantial backlash.
Yeah maybe I am thinking about it too literally. The economy is so big and diverse, and companies are doing so well, I don’t see the economy deteriorating in the next few quarters to recession levels. But a trump crisis-> economic pain, that really punctures his image. Say, a crisis in Taiwan.
Economic catastrophe seems much more like after a midterm loss, as trump lashes out. Just my view of course.
I disagree with "almost regardless of gerrymandering." Gerrymandering can make it much much *worse* for Republicans. The whole idea of a gerrymander is to make the races you win closer than the races you lose. If you get too greedy and the race swings too far, it can be a bloodbath.

Under competitive authoritarianism, it's possible to lose an unfair election. The coercion of media, for one example, makes the playing field unfree and unfair. And we should object to that loss of freedom
I think there is a difference between unfair and unwinnable. The elections WILL be unfair. Trump will abuse every power he has (and a few he doesn’t) to remain despot. We need to be prepared for these tricks while also recognizing that he cannot suppress all of us if enough turn out.
My worry is that, if Dems win the midterms, Trump occupies the Capitol to prevent them from meeting. The current DC goings-on are a dry run. Of course, that'll cause huge protests--but will protests keep happening after Trump orders them shot? That remains to be seen.
Preventing the new congress from sitting is almost certainly a 'civil war button,' but it is also a civil war button pressed on conditions extremely favorable to the anti-Trump coalition: an obviously illegitimate, illegal move made immediately after a clear mandate is delivered to the opposition.
My fear is that red state government collide with trump to deny sending any democrats in their states. But all trump is looking for is bare majorities to maintain a mostly paralyzed legislature, and that’s quite easy to ensure with electoral fuckery
Americans WILL have to physically "remove" MAGA Nazis from power. DOJ, CIA, FBI, MILITARY, GOD, COURTS, POLICE, CONGRESS WON'T DO IT! Impeachment & Amendment 25 will NEVER happen! Redistricting & Voting MAY NOT do it! Dictators leave power unwillingly, usually not breathing. Sic semper tyrannis!

Without doom, how will people earn fake internet points and social media cred? How will they prove their Faith? It's not so much about Trump as it is the very warped digital environment many folks have chosen in live in. To the point where many are no longer in full contact with reality.
Those people should come out to the mass demonstrations on Labor Day this Monday I’m telling you, nothing will make you feel better about the future than seeing several thousand people just as pissed as you are
