On September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan formally surrenders to the Allies, bringing an end to World War II. By the summer of 1945, the defeat of Japan was a foregone conclusion after the US dropped two atomic bombs and the USSR declared war on Japan.

In the wake of the 1882 "Chinese Exclusion Act," September 2, 1885, after miners working in the Union Pacific coal mine in Rock Springs, WY struggled to unionize + strike the White workers blamed their Chinese colleagues as scapegoats, killing 28, wounding 15 and driving everyone else out of town.

On September 1, 1979 Dr. Hazel W. Johnson Brown, who had a doctorate from Catholic University and started her career as a nurse, became the first Black woman to achieve the rank of Brigadier (one star) General in the US Army. Among other things she was director of Walter Reed's Institute of Nursing.

September 1, 1975 HBCU graduate and and flying in over 170 fighter pilot missions in Korea + Vietnam, Daniel "Chappie" James was named the first Black Four-Star general in the US military. He also held the title of Commander-in-CHief of the North American Air Defense Command.

August 30, 1800 a literate enslaved blacksmith, Gabriel Prosser, read about the Haitian Revolution and organized over 1K enslaved for a march to take over Richmond, VA in a rebellion. Two enslaved men leaked the intel prior to its execution and Mr. Prosser + 25 others were captured and executed.

August 29, 1961 civil rights icon Bob Moses is beaten while helping to register voters + becomes the 1st Black person to file criminal charges against a White person in Amite County, MIssissippi. 70% of White adults v. 6% of Black adults = registered then. His attacker was later acquitted.

On August 28, 1955 Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, White members of the Ku Klux Klan, snatched in the middle of the night a child, Chicagoan + 14-year-old Emmett Till from his uncle's home in MS, strip him naked, torture + murder him. He was wrongfully accused of offending a White woman, Carolyn Bryant.

The lead singer's pained, plaintive wail of "let me free why don't you babe" feels 180 degrees apart from Diana Ross' version. The band's live version is better than their recorded version - you can see the drummer + all the musician's emotions. Loved this since 1975.
