Moving Space Command to Alabama is nothing more a kickback for political services rendered.
Once again Trump makes it clear he cares nothing about our country. He’s jeopardizing our nuclear defense capabilities and military readiness for personal reasons, be it political or financial gain or simply some sort of self-satisfying power play. He’s a disgrace as a president.
Now, the U.S. Space Command will not be fully operational for years because the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama lacks the existing infrastructure already available in Colorado. But Alabama is a GOP-dominant state. So, Trump is catering to his base over national security. Yet again.
It wasn't about politics. It was about military readiness. It didn't make sense to put Space Force headquarters in any state other than Colorado when the only priority should be quick and effective communication in a nuclear crisis and there was already an infrastructure.
This is why Pres. Biden chose to headquarter U.S. Space Command in Colorado in 2023. Because all the pertinent Space Force facilities were already there. Peterson, Schriever, Cheyenne Mountain, and Buckley military bases, the whole of USSPACECOM. Sure, it saved money, but it was common sense.
Meanwhile, as the entire U.S. national security apparatus is attempting to navigate nuclear war, they're using satellites to communicate, which are vulnerable to attacks and protected by... USSPACECOM. U.S. Space Command is the central nervous system of our government's nuclear infrastructure.
As the missile travels our way, it's USSPACECOM that quickly gathers data from satellites and radar and space sensors to determine if it's a test or real, a best guess on its trajectory, and its time-to-impact. It feeds that data to other military commands, who assess the situation and advise POTUS.
U.S. Space Command plays a starring role in detection of nuclear missiles. When a nuclear missile is launched anywhere in the world, it's USSPACECOM's Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) that alerts us within seconds of the launch because of the heat signature.
So, every second counts. Every single second. Would you be able to save your family's life even with a half hour? Probably not, but it'd be nice to have as much time as possible to make a decision. If nothing else, figuring out how to care for your kids in that horrible moment is top-of-mind.
Because all that identifying and tracking and inter-agency coordination and White House oversight eats up a lot of time, and you can't send an email to the ICBM that you're in a meeting that's running over and asking if it wouldn't mind pushing back the strike time.
In reality, most of us wouldn't get much of a heads up at all. Because the ICBM needs to be properly identified and confirmed and reconfirmed. Then it has to be imperfectly tracked. Then agencies have to be notified. Then the press. Then the rest of us.
An intercontinental ballistic missile (ICMB) launched from Russia can reach the U.S. in 27 minutes. An ICBM launched from North Korea takes about 30 minutes; some estimates have it as low as 24 min. That doesn't mean we all get a text alert on our phones saying an ICMB is gonna hit in a half hour.
