Many countries signed treaties with Nazi Germany. Some out of spinelessness, like the UK. Some out of self-preservation, like Denmark, Poland, Estonia and the USSR. And it payed off in 1945 when the Red Army crushed the Nazis. 26 million soviets died to rid us from Hitler. Respect them more.
You know the difference between the treaties that UK and France did with Hitler and the one the USSR did? While the Naval and the Munich Agreements only made Hitler stronger, the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact guaranteed the USSR would exist and have resources to crush Hitler years later.
But saying it precipitated WW2 is an absurd exaggeration. It didn't cause WW2 any more than the Anglo-German Naval Agreement that allowed Hitler to build a navy. Or the Munich Agreement between Germany, France and UK that allowed Hitler to annex the Sudetenland.
We have primary sources showing that: 1) the Germans were going to invade the USSR anyway; 2) the USSR knew it and needed to buy time to build defenses; It was a difficult decision. But if it wasn't done, the Germans would have taken out USSR early and the war would have a very different story.

The GDR was bankrupt because instead of reinstating the Nazis and pumping money into it like the US did in the western side, the USSR punished the Nazis and forced the country to pay a steep price for the war and all the people they killed. The West treated Germany as a showcase. The USSR didn't.
