Love how consistent this is with previous maps of Gotham. Big "yes, this feels correct" energy, while also being a little sleeker/cleaner: exactly what you want from something that might pop up on screen for a few seconds, versus the busy detail of something in a reference book.

What movie do you consider "perfect"? π¬ It has puns, it has martial arts, it has giant robots, it has the bisexual crisis of Amy Jo Johnson and Johnny Yong Bosch, the villain is a caricature teen-hating boomer made of purple slime, a hot lady in a druid bikini transforms into an owl. Perfect.

I'm really hoping for Cobb Vanth, but I know that Tim has been busy on Alien Earth for a while. Ezra, too. He's the one character who could canonically refer to Grogu as Baby Yoda and have it be completely in character.

Very much enjoy seeing TWOK not at the top of the list. I know it's iconic and people love it, but Khan doesn't really do anything? It's all luck and coincidence, the only act of agency is ignoring sound advice and getting his crew killed. He's less of a threat than the Kazon or Pakleds.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social)
I am too autistic to figure out my own list, but it's probably not far off this. Maybe with V and VII a little higher, and TMP a little lower? I didn't have all the VHS tapes as a kid, but I did have V, VI, and VII. Big fan of character moments. TMP I like, but the crew is a bit too passive for me.

If people are enjoying this season of Strange New Worlds, thatβs 10000% ok. Youβre allowed to have escapism. But the people getting angry at those of us upset at its deep conservative logic saying βyouβre thinking too deeply, just enjoy it, itβs a fun scifi showβ are being deeply anti-intellectual.

It was established as a regrettable piece of Malcolm's past, though. Trip takes things personally, he feels the least likely to work with them. But, he's the one who was dead, and a known character with that clandestine perspective was narratively useful. No harm in using the toys you're given.

Oh for sure, stuff like uniform differences can be fun. But sometimes O'Brien has the rank pips of a Lieutenant. Voyager is too small for Neelix's ship to fit through the shuttle bay doors. Some stuff is just a plain old whoops, and some fans take it a bit too seriously.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
Aye, exactly! I tend to think of all Star Trek as if it is a retelling of the events, not documentary footage. A lot of fans want an in universe explanation for O'Brien's rank in TNG or Picard's schroedinger's baldness, but a production mistake is a production mistake, not necessarily canon.

I wonder if this is because so much of English history is entwined with other nations. Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans; King Arthur being Welsh, Lancelot being French; historic Kings of England and France. Hard to portray an island of English exceptionalism when there's Europe everywhere you look.

Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
I've found the order especially jarring this season. S1 and S2 kinda had a rhythm: both saved their shenanigans and quirkier episodes for the back half, and stayed more typical up front. S3 has flipped that backwards, and it makes it feel like the priorities are wrong (imo).
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
I think this is genuinely the problem. SNW is trying to be a greatest hits show, but it lacks the time, familiarity, nuance, context that 20+ episodes brings. Hemmer is a prime example. Imagine how much harder that would have hit if we'd grown to know him over six months rather than six weeks.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm sure they were. But we've not even seen them in a diminished capacity, they're just absent, which I think adds to my point. None of the exciting new additions this season seem to have done much and/or lasted very long. It's a real shame.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
I loved Gamble! He was a great addition not just individually, but because he brought out the nurturing side of M'Benga which we lost in S1. I don't understand why we had a scene recruiting a three-armed barman, and have not seen them since. It's like Hemmer. It doesn't feel safe to get invested.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
They're trying so hard to hit the nostalgic high notes, but they're missing the 18 other episodes per year that establish the ethos and characters that make those episodes work. Best of Both Worlds is great, but a big part of that is because it's episodes 74 and 75. We need time to give a shit.

There's a strain of thought that says you shouldn't criticise Star Trek for saying nothing of substance because it's not a television show that is about always saying something, which would be fine if "Star Trek is a show trying to say something and challenge people" wasn't how the show is sold

This is a big part of it for me. S1 had some interesting things to say β the tragedy of Pike, etc β but it feels like they ran out of things to do with the character. Now he just reacts. Adding so many new faces to S3 when the existing cast already lacked attention is a choice I don't understand.

I like that SNW tried something different again this week, but it didn't quite work for me. It's a fun format, but I think part of why it works so well on other shows is that there are enough "normal" episodes for it to be a novelty. IMO would have been a better episide without the gimmick.

Adira should have become Dax. It's a lot to put on a young/insecure character, true, but Ezri wasn't much different. Tal's storyline never really went anywhere, and while a former Admiral SHOULD have given Adira more ways to contribute, the Dax legacy might have actually made the writers do it.

My point was mostly "let's not assume this is their rank when they died, that isn't the only option". Star Trek is actively telling stories in the eras where these characters exist. At face value the wall says Mariner never made Captain, despite that being her arc. Not sure they'd do that.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
True, but Captain Nog appeared (in an alternate future, granted) in DS9, and is a beloved fixture of things like Star Trek Online. Not canon, but certainly part of fan expectation, which is who you design set pieces like this for. If they are saying he died an LT, that's an active choice.

I'm not sure it's rank they died (Lieutenant Nog has a ship named after him), more "rank in the story we teach you about". We still refer to Captain Picard even though he's an Admiral, because that story is most relevant. For DISCO, their 23Β»32 sacrifice is the teachable Starfleet moment.

Might want to look at what a master-at-arms does in the US Navy, factoring in their history that's a pretty solid cross section of what "security" is seen doing in Starfleet.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
FWIW, I have them under Tactical. Starfleet Security seems more like a mix of national security (NSA, DHS) and law enforcement. They might have tactical teams (police raids, etc) but you don't send SWAT on covert ops in foreign territory.

It's not really an "accelerated" learning system? You still (usually) have a degree, you just get it from a university beforehand, rather than getting it from the military. Degree from your homeworld then officer training from Starfleet makes sense amid the Burn.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
Starfleet Academy is quite similar to the USAF Academy or Annapolis (ie. you get military training and an undergraduate degree). In the UK, you get your degree first/elsewhere; your officer training takes months, not years. My money is on the War College being the latter style.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
Not necessarily. Just because "Starfleet Academy" didn't exist doesn't mean that no one was getting any training. They may have stopped the "military training plus an undergraduate degree" four year Academy thing, but everyone must have been getting trained somewhere in the meantime.

It also makes a lot of sense that if you are doing a Cadet show, you pay attention to the Nog / Red Squad era. Sito Jaxa, Dorian Collins and Karen Farris, Wesley and Nog -- I don't think it's an accident that there are characters from the iconic Cadet stories on that wall.
Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent

Deep Jace Nine β¨π (@captuntouchable.bsky.social) reply parent
Red has often been associated with the Academy, so it doesn't seem too out of pocket for them to work that back into their colour scheme regardless of what else Starfleet is doing at the time
