I think you are also correct in your reading of it as “we are not backing down”. Most Qs would be horrified, I think, to be thought of as unkind.
I’ve read this carefully (I’m a Quaker and am aware of this issue) and I think that “kinder ground eludes us” is a rebuke to the writer of the complaint- that the writer, being part of BYM, is unable to find kinder ground, not that the reply is unkind.
