Thank you to @keithellison.bsky.social for bringing community together to celebrate the organized labor workers! Unionized labor protections are critical to building strong communities, so it’s always a joy to stand in solidarity with the folks who keep our cities moving and thriving.
As students across Minnesota return to school, their only focus should be on learning, not their personal safety. The epidemic of gun violence continues to wreak havoc on our neighborhoods and we have to offer our community more than simple platitudes. We can, and must, do better.
There will be a lot more to say as we learn more information, but like many of you in the community I am angry. This is the second mass shooting event in less than 24 hours.
My heart is with all those impacted by the mass shooting this morning at Annunciation Catholic Church. This is an ongoing situation and thankfully there is no reported threat to the community at this time.

I’ve lived the consequences of failed policies and spent my career fighting for fairness, safety, and justice for everyone.
I’m running for Hennepin County Attorney because I believe that public safety starts with public trust, and leadership starts with listening.
I’ve worked to keep guns out of dangerous hands, restore voting rights for tens of thousands of Minnesotans, and invest in community-based violence prevention.
In 2018, I became the first African American to serve on the New Hope City Council, where I built trust between the police department and the community. In 2020, my neighbors sent me to the State Legislature, where I served as vice chair of the Public Safety and Judiciary Committees.
After law school, I worked as a public defender here in Hennepin County — ensuring folks had proper access to their constitutional rights. I went on to serve as legal counsel for Minneapolis Public Schools, then as a labor attorney representing educators across Minnesota.
My mom taught me education was the key to a better life. Her belief brought me to Minnesota nearly 30 years ago to attend college and play football. It’s where I met my wife, discovered my passion for advocacy, and committed to improving communities like the one that raised me.
I grew up on the South Side of Chicago. My community faced gang violence, drug trafficking, and a justice system that, too often, failed the very people it claimed to serve. I lost loved ones to gun violence and watched my neighbors get caught in cycles of incarceration.
