Yes it went from no spring to a blazing hot summer here, and then straight to fall. I'm sorry you might have trouble with your roses this year 🫂 Your problem could actually be your water, use bottled or filtered. Anything over 80° heat change at least every other day whether they eat it or not.
Ours are really particular, they don't like commercial nectar either. Probably because we're 100 yd away from their tall nesting pines, so they can pay to be a little picky.
🙂↕️ this year we had Kingsley the second, the little male 3rd generation of feeder guards, sits on the hook by my 🪟 & sings to me all day. He already left for the season, Some males leave early. I'm a little sad on that. Currently we're having to fill ours multiple times a day, but it's slowing down

Yes starting with half of it is hot water is essential to mixing it well, and cleaning the feeders is important too. We use rubbing alcohol and vinegar on ours after we wash them with water to keep mold production down. In the Chesapeake Bay area it is very humid.
And I agree, hovering, flying backwards, barrel rolls, no other flying creature can do all that they can do. They often hover and come a little bit in the door when my son opens it to go out and feed the birds. They have knocked on the windows before and often hover watching me as I watch them.

My son does repeat phrases to them, we do too. Mind u he's a Disney princess, in the flesh. They watch anime with him, even have favorite shows. I think mostly they listen, but some actually watch in the 🪟. They come when their names are called. & they tell us when something's going on outside
