Bull Durham. The character introductions are amazing. By the end of each characters first scene you get them. The three main characters have clear, precise, and entertaining arcs. The story is compelling and doesn’t rely on “winning the big game” at the end. It’s spotless.
It describes people like me. I went to film school, have watched all the classics, read books on the subject, but my profession is in marketing. You’re a professional scholar on the subject. Magazine writing is, after all, part of the scholarly record.
Perhaps we just need to realize there’s a difference between being a genre fan and being an amateur scholar. A fan who is drawn to a genre doesn’t need to dig into the roots of the genre like a scholar, they just need to watch what interests them and then discuss those films as they see fit.

My head cannon is he turned it into a club. He featured live music at the store for a time and slowly transitioned to a club where several great bands got their start.
It’s the best movie about going to the movies.
The Sandlot did okay in theaters, but it’s mostly one of those home video/cable hits from the 90s. Free Willy was a good hit in its day, but did way better at home. Matinee, though, is a true cult classic. It did not do well on video.
It was dumped by Universal in January and opened behind movies that had been playing for months at that point. I saw it opening weekend in an empty theater.

I like old movies mainly because the movies I grew up on are now old.
People hate this movie? What the hey, dude.
Because Avatar makes a lot of money, i.e. they are popular. That means they are “cool.” And if Avatar is more popular than the things the “haters” like, it means those things are not cool. By extension, then, those people are not cool. And we all want to be cool.
Because we are inside the house more than we are seeing the outside of it.
Spielberg’s earlier work just set the bar too damn high for his later work to clear. Maybe our generation mythologized the quality of his work too much that the younger generations can’t understand our attachment to him. But even his lesser works have some quality worthy of attention.

For me, five times for Blade Runner. Twice on Laserdisc (Criterion CAV and the Directors Cut), DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K. Now that I think of it, six times for Jaws because there was that monster LD set to replace the regular WS LD and then a DTS DVD to replace the Dolby one.
So, they’ll drum up “cause” like they drummed up “emergencies” for deportation policy.

A lot of the ex-reporter newsletters I’ve seen are basically just opinion columns, and not revelatory journalism. One of the problems of the modern age is we are awash in opinion. There’s just too much of it and not enough fact finders. At least, that’s my opinion…

If that were true, he wouldn’t care about superhero movies. He can obviously still get financing for his movies. But, yet, he complains.
Only two studios have the rights to established superhero properties. They physically can’t shape the industry because Sony and Universal and Paramount can’t make them.
What Scorsese is really trying to say is that he wishes more people would pay to see his movies. It’s just sour grapes that the subjects that interest him don’t have wide appeal. It’s always been show business (emphasis on business) and always will be.

Unpopular opinion: having watched it twice, I still find the vampires in “Sinners” to be the most uninteresting part of the movie. Coogler did such a great job setting up all the characters, I would rather their stories develop to a conclusion dramatically.
I agree, but we have to admit the last 15 years or so have not been kind to his legacy. Younger geeks who weren’t around in the 70s through 90s might not feel the same we do about him.

I think the novelization explains that they built a bigger Arkham asylum on the strip of land where the narrows was because of all the people permanently affected by Scarecrow’s gas. But that would have been one hell of a fast construction project.

Cancel culture isn't new; we've always had it. We literally write essays about it in high school for the Scarlet fucking Letter. What changed recently is who we cancel - we no longer cancel you for for being queer, using drugs, divorcing & remarrying, but for being abusive, hateful, or a sex pest.
I haven’t seen any video of the city burning (maybe a car), but I did see video of a bored cop in riot gear shoot an Australian reporter in the leg with a rubber bullet for no good reason.
On CNN when the helicopter camera zoomed back it was barely a few hundred protestors blocking one underpass and the rest of the city was going on apace. Hardly what one would call an “invasion.”
So, based on this logic, if I’m walking around Disney parks I can accuse foreign tourists of anything illegal without proof and they will be whisked off to jail, possibly an El Salvadoran hell prison camp, and there’s nothing to be done about it? Great tourism slogan. Thanks, Rep Mace.
