You can never underestimate the short-term memory of the American public! It's why I say no polls in 2025 matter. No laws that pass in 2025 matter when it comes to the outcome of the 2026 election. The election will ultimately be decided on how the electorate feels in September and October 2026
Chris Vetter (@chrisjvetter.bsky.social) reply parent
They have truly forgotten that 1.1 million people died. In the U.S. alone. They do not believe that efforts made -- social distancing, closing businesses, etc. -- stopped us from having truly overflowing hospitals with no beds available. It is removed from their collective memories.

The longer he goes without speaking directly to reporters with cameras rolling... the intensity will pick up. If he does a Monday morning chopper talk, all this goes away. But if he stays out of the spotlight much longer, people will definitely be asking questions.

I don't doubt a Democrat can win. I don't doubt that Democrats will over-perform next November. But yeah, a 'big loss' for her will be 54-46. That would be a huge margin for a sitting U.S. senator. But I think that is certainly in play. But again, that's if the election were this Tuesday. It's not!

What is the right population for the planet? I have no problem if in 40 years it is down closer to 5 billion. We have to have a place for everyone to live. We have to be able to grow and produce enough food for everyone. Sustained population growth is a bad thing for the planet...

Agreed. I think a lot of farm state Senators would be no votes. Yes, if the USSC upholds this ruling... it would be difficult for Trump to get it passed as a bill out of both houses.

Why do Republicans keep insisting that non-citizens don't have the same constitutional rights as U.S. citizens? I am being serious... where did they get that idea from? Because Antonin Scalia made it clear they have the same rights while here in the U.S. Don't they still love Scalia?

I think there needs to be more of a drumbeat that calls for the release of Trump's medical files. The country should know more about the health of the president, whether they like him or not. We need a healthy president of sound mind and body.

A year ago, the GOP had a 64-35 advantage in the Assembly (what we call the House) and a 22-11 advantage in the Senate. So, they were two seats away from a super-majority that would have allowed them to override any veto. After ending the gerrymander, it is now 54-45 and 18-15 after last fall's vote
Chris Vetter (@chrisjvetter.bsky.social) reply parent
I think making a 50/50 split of Congressmen in a state that is historically 52-48 or closer is the very definition of ENDING the gerrymandering. Pocan is calling for the end of the gerrymandered system where GOP have 75% of the seats in a 50/50 state
Chris Vetter (@chrisjvetter.bsky.social) reply parent
The last time I saw Mark Pocan (the Dem who represents Madison/WI-2), he was showing how the map could be changed to include the far west Madison suburbs into WI-3. That would flip WI-3 blue without hurting a Democrat's ability to retain WI-2. Again, DVO beat R. Cooke by less than 52-48% last year
Chris Vetter (@chrisjvetter.bsky.social) reply parent
You can't stress enough how the country has changed. When I moved here in 2001, David Obey won the Northwest WI seat for years and years. He retired (didn't seek reelection) and Duffy won. That whole quadrant just turned so Red after being blue. Kind's district was the same way.
Chris Vetter (@chrisjvetter.bsky.social) reply parent
Old maps kept counties together better. The newer ones cut counties in pieces with weird lines. I am in Chippewa County. It used to all be in WI-7 (Sean Duffy's seat in the past!) I am now in WI-3. Because Chippewa County has jagged boundaries.
Chris Vetter (@chrisjvetter.bsky.social) reply parent
So... the federal maps were left largely the same as 2012 (after that census). Minor tweaks were made, but people hoped to 'end the gerrymandered maps.' WI currently has 6 GOP seats and 2 Dem seats. As we've seen in other states... it would be VERY easy to redraw maps and make it 4-4.
Chris Vetter (@chrisjvetter.bsky.social) reply parent
Just checked our paper database. He was here Aug. 11. He campaigned for State Rep. Katrina Shankland. She lost the primary to Rebecca Cooke... who went on to lose to Derrick Van Orden in WI-3 which covers western WI (Eau Claire and La Crosse). Cooke is among 3 Dem candidates this year.
