Hope so. As important as a pass rusher is to the Eberflus defensive scheme, wild that they couldn’t together find a guy to plug in or coach up in the draft of free agency before trading for Sweat.

I don’t think Poles is doing all that great of a job. They’re maybe on a lower trajectory than Ryan Pace’s teams, and I think Pace climbed out of a bigger talent hole than he left behind.

Very cool when I find a big long recipe blog that’s like “20 steps to perfect tofu that’s exactly the same as if you just plopped it out of the package and added packet of taco seasoning.”

Both of my sons kicked off their marching band seasons over the weekend, my older son marching his first year in college. Proud of them and all the hard work they put into it.

Jerry is probably always the limiter, but that’s even more of a reason to be skeptical of Getz. He’s Jerry’s yes man. It’s what it is. Maybe they can go from horrible to just bad next year. Appreciate you indulging my complaints, but I’ll stop chewing up your afternoon with them.
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
Thats fair, upside guys go bust more often. And I think on the field the Sox have been getting more out of guys defensively than they have, so progress there. But in his yearly performance review I think he still has to answer for the lack of progress on developing major leagues from 2017-2023.
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
Your farm system should produce 2-3 WAR guys so you don’t have to trade star players for them to fill those -WAR sinkholes. Can’t even say it’s early to judge because Getz has been director of player development since 2017. We going to wait 10 years and two rebuilds like with Rick Hahn?
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s like following a rebuilding sports team. It’s the hope that sustains us on the journey.
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
Even the Crochet trade, I don’t think there’s much doubt the Red Sox got the best player. The White Sox got volume to paper over their weak system, but they’re going nowhere if they’re constantly trading down talent-wise. A team full of Teels and Meidroths isn’t bad, but not a contender.
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
If Getz had come in here from another team, I’d maybe give him more slack for having to dig out of a huge hole. But he’s one of the guys who made them so bad!
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess I’m less impressed. They’ve bounced back from historically bad to just really bad. Getz loses every trade, including ones he doesn’t make. Some fringe free agents worked better than Hahn’s guys, but others have been bad. Plus I have to looks at Mike Clevinger again.

Not my favorite memory, but one that stands out because the game felt so weird: the 95-96 Bulls that won 72 games were unbeaten at home until April when they lost to a .500-ish Hornets team they’d blown out in Charlotte a few days earlier.

Glad we got it. That era from the Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere album to Harvest is my favorite Neil era, “Old Man” one of the high points. Wish I had time to go see him in Milwaukee to maybe catch “Cinnamon Girl” since he’s mixing that in, too.

I even have some in my fridge for taco bowls this week. Mine isn’t beautiful like the article, but the box grating method really does give you the flavor and texture of ground chicken. It’s even faster and easier if you have a thawed tofu brick ready.
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
Buy it, throw it straight in the freezer. When it thaws it’s super easy to squeeze the water out. You don’t have to press it, but that speeds it up. This recipe is good, but you can also season it for tacos, or use BBQ and soy sauce to make sloppy joes (janes?, IDK what people call them w/tofu).

Consider a dozen years ago: If the Hawks had signed Brandon Saad to a contract like this out of his ELC, don’t trade him to Columbus for Artem Anisimov, who they immediately extended, how much better could they have been after 2015?
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social)
Maybe it’s a gamble that Nazar is going to outperform this contract, but it’s a better gamble than the money the Blackhawks have thrown at scores of other guys.
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
If Nazar’s position was rightly that he should get more than Tyler Bertitties, the Hawks just paid what they had to pay.

Nobody is really making a bad point there, but the default format for framing an idea doesn’t have to be “Look at this guy!” Sometimes when I see a screen cap like that, I suspect it’s to keep people from clicking through to get the full context.

Especially the draft, though they had a good run of amateur free agents like Magglio and Carlos Lee. After that Himes run of McDowell, Ventura, Thomas, Fernandez, it was hot garbage in the first round until Chris Sale.
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
Ventura under appreciated by Sox fans even before his disastrous stint at manager, which I don’t blame him for entirely.
Chris P (@chrispummer.bsky.social) reply parent
I remember after Ventura broke his leg Peter Gammons saying on Baseball Tonight, “Chris Snopek is a Major League baseball player.” Not his finest bit of analysis. I’d wonder what happened after he was ok in 95-96, but the Sox struggled to matriculate prospects in the early-to-mid 90s.

When I was a lowly writer for the Elgin Courier News I wrote before 2007 the Sox should trade Joe Crede. Some guy from West Dundee called up to tell me how dumb I was, Crede was the best 3B he’d seen in nearly 50 years. I asked what about Ventura. He said, “defensively.” Uh, Robin had 6 gold gloves.
