Honestly I just think its institutional: the barrier to getting a Labour leader out is just a lot higher than in the Conservative Party, which does tend to result in some fatalism.
Chris Terry-Enescu (@cjterry.bsky.social) reply parent
Your mentions are still better than mine for suggesting that New Labour was a better government than this
Chris Terry-Enescu (@cjterry.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, but ultimately it's still a choice. Like sure, I would not like to start from here, but it's still legitimate to complain about what is ultimately just poor leadership.
Chris Terry-Enescu (@cjterry.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, the PM can be a different guy. That is a thing that the Labour Party could do.
Chris Terry-Enescu (@cjterry.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean I wouldn't call that either progressive or not progressive as legislation. Ultimately also triggered by the SNP winning a majority in 2011, which obviously was not an event that happened under New Labour
Chris Terry-Enescu (@cjterry.bsky.social) reply parent
Very different political opinion context mind. And in general a *huge* leap forwards in LGBT+ rights across the 13 years in power. A lot of the current roleback on trans rights stuff is explicitly rollback on New Labour era legislation.

I am not going to claim that this is easy or doesn't have drawbacks. It would require some really tricky choices. But public services being better is basically an issue everyone can agree on and the public are more willing to make trade offs than they're stereotyped as IMO.
Chris Terry-Enescu (@cjterry.bsky.social) reply parent
As I say in the piece, you always require *some* polarisation as a political strategy as you need to divide electorates in way favourable to you. If it was me, I'd have gone for an all out push on public services, which IMO, is what people elect Labour governments for.

This is incidentally why it's important that Starmer has no real project. I don't think many on the centre left would expect a Labour government to seriously manage to make Britain into a progressive paradise on every single issue, but it's hard at this point to say what progressives are gaining
Chris Terry-Enescu (@cjterry.bsky.social) reply parent
New Labour was also very good at making its more progressive elements feel like they were moderate and centrist than they were, I dare say. This is not to say that I think New Labour was all progressivism all the time, but it's only with hindsight that I appreciate what it pulled off in some places
