China’s political system has learned to harness market forces, Ma Tianjie explains in his book, "In Search of Green China". The state has adopted policies which have kicked off a virtuous circle of technology learning, cost reduction and market penetration. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

China’s path to becoming greener wasn’t driven by environmental litigation or citizen pressure, but by centralized, top-down governance. And while that model may be hard to transplant to other countries, the journey itself holds lessons. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

The US has over 50 years of experience with pressurized water nuclear reactors. Most are now operating safely and at high capacity factors. Why not build more? They are too expensive. Vinod Khosla is deceiving himself by arguing that the main obstacle to abundant nuclear is over regulation.
cleanforgood.bsky.social (@cleanforgood.bsky.social) reply parent
For decades, the nuclear industry argued for larger reactors driven by the principle of economies of scale. Many fixed costs (like security, complex control systems, and regulatory overhead) don't scale linearly. SMRs, by definition, lose some economies of scale due to their smaller size.

AI data center developers probably suffer from some hubris about the magnitude of energy that they will need over the next decade. The 2% annual growth for electricity across the US seems reasonable but it may be more back loaded, with a slower roll-out of the electrification of everything.
cleanforgood.bsky.social (@cleanforgood.bsky.social) reply parent
There is a policy logic in providing higher levels of tax credits to emerging zero-carbon technologies like deep geothermal and fusion as well as to electric system enabling technologies like longer duration batteries, other forms of energy storage and advanced conductors.

They should be paid the real-time clearing price if they participate in the markets which requires the submission of bids in the day-ahead energy market. Many DERs cannot directly in the wholesale power markets because the power is not deliverable beyond the distribution system.
cleanforgood.bsky.social (@cleanforgood.bsky.social)
Electricity prices in wholesale markets fluctuate throughout the day and night due to varying supply and demand. Prices are lower during off-peak hours when demand is low and renewable generation (solar) is abundant. Batteries are profitably charged and discharged during these time periods.
