So, our pensions have changed massively - the exchequer hasnāt kept pace and seems to be about to correct that - but donāt whinge about your kids being asked to return your overpaid benefits.
If youāve been retired for any length of time your estate would likely still be paying back less than the govt paid in as long as the exchequer only claw back what they put in - unless you had phenomenal growth from your investment.
So the accusation of the chancellor thieving from peopleās savings pots is based on an entirely false premise. If the govt paid 20 or 40% of your pot value (which you gained from in invested growth) why shouldnāt they claim it back on your death?
For a defined benefits scheme there would be a nominal death benefit paid to the (usually) spouse or other nominated beneficiary. Sometimes this was/is only paid if you die before you retire. If you die later often the survivor gets not a lot.
Not all of this pot is yours. If you die you have no need of the governmentās free money - and it wasnāt supplied to give your children a financial leg up.
In later life you can draw down on this combined pot as income or as an annuity. You may have withdrawn 25% as a lump sum tax free butā¦
