Crazy thing is it wonāt satisfy the right, it wonāt be met with relief by the left and most moderate peeps wonāt even notice - UNLESS it actually works. Starmer must know his whole govts future rests on this policy. Succeed and itās a game changer. Fail and Britain is screwed.

The exact blueprint of the Sovereign Individual - control the messaging and media, gain power, create chaos, bet on known outcomes, siphon tax revenues into private companies, run down public services, find a blame target, use media to promote hate of target, retain/regain power, repeat on steroids

I mean why else does anyone think the Tories abolished the LTA in the Finance Act 2024? It was their dying act - and their ultimate āmake our rich friends richerā policy
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly Andrew. And that is what it is. Plus the state pension. The āproblemā is many high earners see a pension as a 40% ROI plan and maximise their annual and life time allowances solely because of that free money.
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
So, our pensions have changed massively - the exchequer hasnāt kept pace and seems to be about to correct that - but donāt whinge about your kids being asked to return your overpaid benefits.
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
If youāve been retired for any length of time your estate would likely still be paying back less than the govt paid in as long as the exchequer only claw back what they put in - unless you had phenomenal growth from your investment.
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
So the accusation of the chancellor thieving from peopleās savings pots is based on an entirely false premise. If the govt paid 20 or 40% of your pot value (which you gained from in invested growth) why shouldnāt they claim it back on your death?
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
For a defined benefits scheme there would be a nominal death benefit paid to the (usually) spouse or other nominated beneficiary. Sometimes this was/is only paid if you die before you retire. If you die later often the survivor gets not a lot.
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
Not all of this pot is yours. If you die you have no need of the governmentās free money - and it wasnāt supplied to give your children a financial leg up.
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
In later life you can draw down on this combined pot as income or as an annuity. You may have withdrawn 25% as a lump sum tax free butā¦
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
What seems to be escaping the debate is that 20% or 40% if youāre a higher band tax payer, gets added to contributions for free by the government.
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
Today the vast majority of pensions are savings plans defined by the contributions made to that plan by the saver and, if a workplace pension, the employer AND the government
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social) reply parent
20 years ago the vast majority of workplace pensions were defined benefits final salary schemes. The employee or pensioner had a guaranteed income but not a pot of money that was their investment value.
CllrAndyOddy (@cllrandyoddy.bsky.social)
So thereās uproar at the possibility the exchequer may tax inherited pension pots. Times have changed - and so have pensions. Why the chancellorās ideas have merit and why you shouldnāt defend benefit fraud šŖ”š§µ
