A hospital would likely have diagnosed me with "failure to progress" after 48h of being stuck at 4cm, and again when I hit the 2hr mark of pushing during delivery. a whole cascade of interventions would have started that I didn't need. Daughter was born healthy and happy after 2hr15m of pushing.
Corking (@corking118.bsky.social) reply parent
and luckily so-- I was in labor for DAYS and a hospital almost certainly would have pressured me to get an epidural, to be on my back in bed, and to take no food or water. My midwives in contrast kept me comfortable, provided lots of encouragement, and kept me fed so I had strength to continue on.
Corking (@corking118.bsky.social) reply parent
for example both of my local hospitals perform c-sections at rates higher than state and national averages. When I was pregnant two years ago I was lucky to be able to work with midwives at a birth center instead of being stuck with a hospital where I had a high risk of ending up with a C-section.
Corking (@corking118.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't disagree with you in theory but would add that a lot of the "I want 'natural' birth without medical help" sentiment from some (myself included) is a direct result of women receiving low-quality obstetric care in hospitals that care more about their bottom line than about patient comfort.
