They’ve been super active in our culdesac this past week! It’s a family of five (two parents and three juvies) and they’ve all been hanging out in the yard/street multiple times, including this morning.

I had 3 instances of crested caracara-in-the-yard today! The adult + two juvenile sightings. I think the 2 juvie sightings are the same bird. It showed up around lunch to forage in the grass then returned about an hour ago to the ash tree. If you’re new here, hi we got neighborhood caracaras. 🌿🪶

Week 2 done! 😁🤙🏻 Gonna coast here for a few weeks before bumping up again. I want a strong race for the inaugural San Antonio Marathon so the goal is to bump my mileage to about 50 miles a week by week 11-13 with my longest run of 21 miles for week 13. Then the sweet sweet taper. 🏃🏻♀️😎

Oh no, I think @imarling.bsky.social has got me hooked on Maurten. I did an 9:30ish-pace 12-mi this morning and man I feel incredible. I downed a drink mix an hour prior, downed a gel at 5 miles and 8 miles and ate a bar post-run. Amazing what good well-timed fuel can do for your training runs lol

Y’ALL. THE COOLEST SHIT OBSERVATION OF MY LIFE 😭 The crested caracara juvies left the nest a few weeks ago. I’ve seen them around while on my runs…but today one of them WAS IN THE FRONT YARD. AND IT WAS PICKING AT A “MAJOR” MALE ALOEUS OX BEETLE. It flew off without the beetle so I got a photo! 🌿🪶
So sweet! I love barn swallows. And yes lol these caracara photos were taken through my home office window because opening the front door would startle them off.

RAAHHHH I’M GOING BACK TO SCHOOL ….Kinda. lol I have the opportunity to online audit some wildlife and sustainable land management classes this semester at no cost at [Redacted] University but I get the certifications and course credits. 😁😁😁 I enrolled and classes start next week! 🤠

I was so excited when I discovered them. Their usual nesting site is just down the road and apparently they’ve had chicks here for the past handful of years now!

Do you like stand-alone cheese? Like cheese cubes or string cheese? Those are dairy and protein which help with fullness. How about yogurt cups? Protein yogurt or full fat Greek yogurt can help too without making your tummy feel icky. Stuff like chewy granola bars are great snacks with sugar too.

Raahhhh post-15 mi SUGAR My favorite thing about long distance runners is that you can generally tell when we enter our training blocks because most of us develop a little bit of belly fat during this time from all the sugar we consume to meet our fueling demands lol I call it my nutrition pouch.

Our neighborhood is SUPER old and the roads needed to be redone 10 years ago LOL The city is finally redoing the worse of the roads here. They stripped the asphalt yesterday so that was fun to run on today I’ll have to change my route when they lay down the new asphalt later in the week lol
Aka wildflowers have seeded and are spent and they look like fried toothpicks right now, including my pollinator area LOL Most Texas wildflowers make a comback bloom around October-November then die back again for the winter, minus the winter bloomers.

The San Antonio Zoo is home to one of the largest colonies of Texas rock squirrels, made up of scattered aggregations of breeding females, subordinate males, and a dominant male overseer. You can find them throughout the zoo…and is pretty much the main reason I have a membership. 😅 🐿️🌿
Also an American flamingo chick hatched about a week ago in exhibit (San Antonio Zoo). It’s so ugly-cute I wanna cryyy lol 😭🥹 🦩🐥

Are you in for the San Antonio Marathon event? I’m actually running it lol. If you wanna get out of the downtown area, I recommend getting out on the greenway. The closest to downtown is the Missions trail. When I run it, I start at Blue Star trailhead. It shares a parking lot with Halcyon coffee.
It’s not the biggest zoo out there but it’s definitely worth a visit. I love our zoo so much!!!

I know!!! I love them SO much. The Texas subspecies occurring in the Texas Hill Country is known for that black cape. Other rock squirrels across the range don’t have that prominent black hood.
Over the weekend I had my first friends-sleepover and my husband was just the sweetest man ever. He cooked us a really wonderful dinner and was talkative and engaging and it just really warmed my heart to see my quiet timid partner going out of his way to love on my friends. It meant a LOT to me lol

Me, a codependent, now packing a whole ass bottle of sunscreen and making sure each crew member puts some on at the trailhead at the start of our runs.
Recently discovering that the majority of my running crew doesn’t put on sunscreen makes me wanna THROW UP LOL WEAR SUNSCREEN IF YOU ARE SPENDING MORE THAN A HALF HOUR OUTSIDE GUYS PROTECT YOUR SKIN 🥴
