What I'm being at is that all of the things you said are there, absolutely, but they're all in service of the bigger theme of what it means to Parent. Dahlia is Alessa's mother, sure, but she forces her into a role she doesn't want and abuses her to make her fit that mold better, ending with her

I really wanna try to make video essays and I might start with one about why I'm so harsh on SH2 Remake but also consider it a solid 8/10

Profile picture CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent

Right, and I feel like that's an area the remake actually excels - the fog is beautiful and haunting. It hides things in a way that sets up for some incredible possibilities in framing. The problem is that they only use it to hide more mannequins.

Profile picture CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent

They wanted to do justice to SH2, but at the same time, they wanted to put their own stamp on it, and a lot of the time that stamp makes things more blunt where the original was subtle, or padded out where the original was concise. It wants to be the new SH2, but it can't escape the fact that [.]

Agreed, which fits my two major thoughts about SH2R: 1) it tries to be faithful and new at the same time, and I feel like that makes it fail at being either. 2) if they want to make a presentation change as major as that, they needed a stronger creative vision of their own, and they didn't.

I'd honestly disagree with that in this context in particular - they erased a LOT of extremely intentional cinematography, especially in changing the camera from being at set points to a free OTS camera.

I'm this way about Silent Hill 2's fixed camera angles - even if it was a limitation they'd have rather not dealt with, they used it well to create some iconic visuals that the remake barely gestures at. The remake DOES try to create some cool moments when they know your perspective is going [.]

without you. Considering that training a model with copyrighted materials isn't considered fair use, I wonder if being able to prove that a model was trained on material similar to an AI written (or even cowritten) work would be enough to legally prove plagiarism.

The tricky thing about plagiarism legally is that style, tone, concepts, characters, archetypes, etc. aren't considered enough to be plagiarism - in the precedent of Harlan Ellison, you need to be able to PROVE that you brought an idea or concept to someone, they saw it, and then later did something

Silent Hill would be a killer Secret Lair I think, with its own visual style. Fun to theorize about anyway That or a Masahiro Ito set, thinking about the Yoshitaka Amano Leliana and the Junji Ito set and getting excited about the idea lol

A Magic: The Gathering Card of the character Leliana, with artwork by Yoshitaka Amano. The image is Leliana, floating and saving the view, wearing all back clothing consisting of a black, circular headdress, a low cut, flowing gown, shoulders uncovered, and purple cloth rippling behind her, as if it's suspended in the wind. Behind her are three skulls, floating in blue flames on a spectral purple background. The text in Japanese. I don't speak Japanese sorry The image from the prior picture in full, revealing the bottom of the gown, flowing around her in the air, wearing long black boots, one leg perched in front of the other. The Magic: The Gathering Card Doomsday, with Art by Junji Ito. The image depicts a fleshy planet, covered in gigantic regions that look like eyes made of countless massive speaks, dominating the sky and the top part of the art. Below it, a large city is being bombarded with laser-like lines, originating from the planet, and skeletal demonic entities fly about, seemingly attacking the city as the planet descends. The city is wracked by explosions, buildings toppling under the weight of the horrors being forced upon the metropolis. I don't think we're getting out of this one, folks. The card costs four black mana to cast. It's a sorcery. The text reads, The Magic: The Gathering Card Carrion Feeder, with art by Junji Ito. The art is in stark black and white, depicting a graveyard. Rows upon rows of gravestones dominate the image, with an open grave, currently being reached by a nude, lumpy ghoul with rows of sharp teeth near the viewer, slightly hidden by a single gravestone to the viewers left. The ghoul is pulling a mostly rotted corpse out of the coffin in the grave, clawed hands pulling the corpse out by it's eye sockets. The arms of the corpse seem to be clutching the creature, as if it's fighting to be left alone. The ghoul is seconds away from taking a bite out of the corpse. In the background, an onlooker cowers behind a gravestone, in front of more rows of gravestones and a small, cylindrical mausoleum with a rounded roof. Behind these, dark trees block the scene in beneath a blinding white sky, promising no escape. The card costs one black mana to cast, and is a creature, subtype Zombie. The text reads,

There's a mix of that and a wild urge to look like the smartest person in the room I was arguing with someone who was telling me chatGPT was better than meditation because meditation is a biased mirror, and the bot isn't

I feel like you're misunderstanding what I'm saying, dude. Chat GPT and Midjourney aren't important. The things you're talking about are. But the things that aren't important are stealing the oxygen from the things that are.

Again, if that bothers you, blame the people pushing useless tech and making it necessary to push everything under the same umbrella to get funding.

Machine Learning, or other technologies that efficiently adapt to and automate rote tasks. The things that MOST PEOPLE are excited about are things that draw a pretty picture you can claim is yours, or a "chat" algorithm you can point to the output of and go, "Look! It can think!". >

No. See, I'm not excited about "AI", period, because the technologies line Midjourney and ChatGPT are the b things actually being touted as advances in AI, as being steps towards Machines That Really Think. That's garbage, that's not happening. The actual interesting things are usually "just" >

Those also aren't the advances that MOST people are excited about, or what they mean when they say AI. Those actually useful and interesting applications are overshadowed by text prediction algorithms you can "talk" to instead of people and Image Averagers. If that annoys you, blame AI Evangelists.

Definitely - it's wild that most of that video is recounting the plot but it's both entertaining and feels justified. The man is a wizard.

Did this but they put a couple kids in it, all all stage-makeupped to be injured, had real paramedics take them to the "hospital" which was the auditorium and then did a play about them dying in the hospital while their parents cried except their parents were also just students, and ended w/ lecture

The Internet of that era and the one we have now are ridiculously different in a way that's difficult to explain The best I've been able to do is sit someone down in front of Hypnospace Outlaw and tell them "yeah it was this"

Hope you can find some relief for this - invisible stuff like that is tough. I've got a chronic pain condition and the only way I could get someone to actually take it seriously and get a diagnosis besides "exercise more idk" was to demand tests until they found something. Wishing you well

Like imagine just being Robespierre there, you're trying to do the Reign of Terror and then the most beautiful man you've ever seen just bowls on in and goes "VAMPIRES ARE REAL AND THEY'RE GOING TO KILL YOU" Imagine if you're watching a documentary and that just happens

Finished Castlevania Nocturne tonight Richter had no real character arc but Alucard got to burst in on Robespierre doing the French Revolution and go "ROBESPIERRE THERE'S FUCKING VAMPIRES" so I feel like that's a net gain
