For sure, you have to be the opposite of Walter - care for your environment, the people around you, and yourself.

What I'm being at is that all of the things you said are there, absolutely, but they're all in service of the bigger theme of what it means to Parent. Dahlia is Alessa's mother, sure, but she forces her into a role she doesn't want and abuses her to make her fit that mold better, ending with her
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd argue that still fits in the character-limit-satisfying box I put out with "parenting" but yeah same

Yeah that's what I said
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
I honestly don't have the spoons to put together my thoughts about it at the moment but the core of what I'm seeing there is that after he's abandoned, Walter literally objectifies the role of Mother and uses her as an excuse to do what he wanted to do anyway There's something there, def

I really wanna try to make video essays and I might start with one about why I'm so harsh on SH2 Remake but also consider it a solid 8/10
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
Right, and I feel like that's an area the remake actually excels - the fog is beautiful and haunting. It hides things in a way that sets up for some incredible possibilities in framing. The problem is that they only use it to hide more mannequins.
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
we ALREADY HAVE an SH2. We can't NOT compare them.
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
They wanted to do justice to SH2, but at the same time, they wanted to put their own stamp on it, and a lot of the time that stamp makes things more blunt where the original was subtle, or padded out where the original was concise. It wants to be the new SH2, but it can't escape the fact that [.]
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed, which fits my two major thoughts about SH2R: 1) it tries to be faithful and new at the same time, and I feel like that makes it fail at being either. 2) if they want to make a presentation change as major as that, they needed a stronger creative vision of their own, and they didn't.
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd honestly disagree with that in this context in particular - they erased a LOT of extremely intentional cinematography, especially in changing the camera from being at set points to a free OTS camera.
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
that the remake just... doesn't.
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
to be in a certain direction (the nurse walking towards you in the dark hallway and pyramid head behind the wire fence as you descend a ladder in the labyrinth come to mind), but overall they don't really take advantage of the new perspective. The original had a distinct cinematography to it [.]
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm this way about Silent Hill 2's fixed camera angles - even if it was a limitation they'd have rather not dealt with, they used it well to create some iconic visuals that the remake barely gestures at. The remake DOES try to create some cool moments when they know your perspective is going [.]
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social)
I'm surprised I haven't seen more talk about Bloober Team very likely doing a Silent Hill 3 remake That's an EXTREMELY feminist story when you really dig down into it and they don't have a great track record with women in their games, even their version of SH2

without you. Considering that training a model with copyrighted materials isn't considered fair use, I wonder if being able to prove that a model was trained on material similar to an AI written (or even cowritten) work would be enough to legally prove plagiarism.
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
The tricky thing about plagiarism legally is that style, tone, concepts, characters, archetypes, etc. aren't considered enough to be plagiarism - in the precedent of Harlan Ellison, you need to be able to PROVE that you brought an idea or concept to someone, they saw it, and then later did something

Ever since learning more about Tokimeki Memorial and how it's 100% absolutely a game where the core mechanics are centered around dating, yes, absolutely. Two completely different genres, calling a VN a dating sim is such a dead giveaway that they just... don't know a dating sim is
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent

Between this and other things I've seen around it seems like the game is encouraging you to look at an unfun task, go "okay this sucks I'm missing something", and then go find that thing It turns a rote "Use the leeches to protect yourself from radiation!" tooltip into a player discovery

Like, there were two writers, Abrams one of them, on the final script and other script drafts to work from, and THAT made the cut? I agree that it reeks of rush job but it feels more like an outline than a finished product most of the time, not saying you're wrong but it's wild this is what made it
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
That's fair, I just have a lot of trouble imagining the exact circumstances that led to establishing your major villain with the line "somehow, Palpatine has returned" while writing a script you give any amount of shits about
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
That makes a LOT of sense, and also goes a long way to explaining the TFA/ROS tone mismatch. I could absolutely see Abrams phoning it in after being micromanaged like that

Can't agree with you more I'm honestly wondering how much of the more Saturday Morning Cartoon elements and dialogue were because he was basically crushing two movies together, and how much would've been there anyway - really weird how much of that there was after TFA was relatively grounded
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh yeah more than fair, First Order's lack of real backstory is 100% the weakest part of the first two Literally just having some mild Show Don't Tell exposition of some corrupt planet doing Villain Shit and making it clear they're financing it would've instantly solved it
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely, the entire b problem is Abrams refusing to "yes, and" Johnson, and just pretending TLJ was the episode 8 he would've made Palpatine coming back might not have been horrible if it was built up to, but instead it was first revealed in Fortnite lmao

CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
No. See, I'm not excited about "AI", period, because the technologies line Midjourney and ChatGPT are the b things actually being touted as advances in AI, as being steps towards Machines That Really Think. That's garbage, that's not happening. The actual interesting things are usually "just" >
CrimesOptimal (@crimesoptimal.bsky.social) reply parent
Those also aren't the advances that MOST people are excited about, or what they mean when they say AI. Those actually useful and interesting applications are overshadowed by text prediction algorithms you can "talk" to instead of people and Image Averagers. If that annoys you, blame AI Evangelists.
