Which do you prefer, verbose or concise code, and why? Comment every line, or let the code speak for itself?
Chris Jay (@crisjay.bsky.social) reply parent
I bought a late model EV, one fob came with it, I got a spare preemptively. Like 600 as I recall! The fob thing is a rip-off, I mean you need to monitor the battery on ANOTHER gizmo? I was on a road trip when a fob started to die, trust me no fun!
Chris Jay (@crisjay.bsky.social) reply parent
Sphere of influence vs sphere of concern.
Chris Jay (@crisjay.bsky.social) reply parent
I bought a spare from the dealership, robbery, that! I tried to roll back to a physical key, but dealership said no can do. I'll try the locksmith/hacker next time!
Chris Jay (@crisjay.bsky.social) reply parent
Saves a lot of time, too. Verbal is also more suited to pursuasion, written is more suited to information gathering.
Chris Jay (@crisjay.bsky.social) reply parent
Or 100%... 😎
Chris Jay (@crisjay.bsky.social) reply parent
I read a study somewhere that rational argumentation is just another form of pursuasion. Throw in some motivated reasoning and willful ignorance, and I'm sold. Rational arguments that cherry pick their evidence (most of them), are an attempt to pursuade, not arrive at any truth.

Knowing (or even suspecting) that you are being observed and classified by a system that can grant or deny access to resources (loans, insurance, etc etc) all force you to modify your behavior to achieve a favorable classification and thus a positive outcome. You discipline yourself.

I'm thinking specifically about occupying cities in order to reduce crime. Yeah, crime goes down under martial law, but so does, you know, a free society?
Chris Jay (@crisjay.bsky.social) reply parent
As I recall, that's a quote from a soldier who was involved in the "My Lai massacre" in Vietnam, 1968.

My favorite is from the final days of the Soviet Union, while Gorbachev's Glasnost and Perestroika programs were under way: An old man is finishing his work at a Moscow office when his wife calls and asks him to get some meat for dinner on his way home. 1/5

Agree, one of them was more facial and less verbal. When I was in oz in the early 90s, the whole hostel would pause and watch it weekly. Great cultural experience!

RE while(true) loop, basically. Called "event driven programming". There's a part of the application/os that is repeatedly scaning for changes in the code. Same thing with your mouse pointer tracking across the screen, it's just asking the pointer "where are you?" Like a zillion times/sec.

Yeah, like being a backpacker in a foreign land? No job, a hostel bed, a spending limit, and no native language abilities, dude that will teach you to appreciate those in a hurry. Just say'n. The US private ownership culture wants to monetize EVERYTHING. Why I hate going back east these days

Eur has an added problem that they have no central bank/no sovereign control of spending (depends how you look at it). Australia/aud is a good proxy for... If not emerging markets then export markets. Their Divys are high, as is their interest rates. Much like Canada, sans petroleum reserves.
Chris Jay (@crisjay.bsky.social) reply parent
Yen could come back if USD goes crazy. Whatever the world's capital needs to flock to, the world's capital will stabilize. Yen has been more stable/boring that USD for years. Could be Eur, could be something new. Look to sovereign govt bonds, see how they perform, non USD denominated. Start there!
