There are a few nice free ones on the DMC website. I also found this, which isn't technically a sampler but gives the same vibe. I can't wait to get started. The black aida cloth arrived only today. I need to inventory my threads and order whatever I'm missing. www.etsy.com/ie/listing/1...

I got a little foam footstool for under my desk after reading a thread on here about "what have you bought lately that was great" — people talked about little doo-dads they bought that improved their quality of life. And, yeah. This thing is amazing. Highly recommend if you're at the desk for hours.

I have hunted pheasant, and tagged along on plenty of rabbit and deer trips so I could field dress them. The land was always family-owned/leased, either ours or a friend's. Those animals threatened crops and are prone to overpopulation in that area, so it was a win/win.

My family were subsistence hunters. A deer can keep a family of four fed well for at least half a year, and we kept chickens for the rest. Everybody had kitchen gardens and vegetable patches, and canned every single thing that wasn't eaten as soon as it was picked. It's just how we lived.

A digital illustration of Margaret Lanterman, the Log Lady from Twin Peaks. She’s a wire lady with big round red-timed glasses and a very 80s mom haircut. She’s wearing a plaid shirt with a thick knit brown cardigan over it and cradling a log in her arms as she looks at you. The background is bluish gray with vertical stripes that could suggest tree trunks. Over her shoulder on the left is a dark silhouette of a seemingly sinister owl. A thought bubble in the form of a long arc passes behind her head and little bubbles lead in with end to the owl and the log. Inside the bubble it reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

I love Plitvice, but the signage makes me giggle every time. I just can't be serious when there.

Few symbols are as Venetian as the lion on a column in the Piazzetta beside St Mark’s Basilica. But new research shows it may not be Venetian at all - its copper traces point to Tang dynasty China🦁 1/5

The comments on the project photos were very much “ok, two questions: did you have difficulty getting gauge for the ribbing in that specific yarn, and also… is that Michael Stipe wearing it??”

Any knitters out there remember the time Michael Stipe popped up on Ravelry modelling hats?

Basic Income for the Arts Year 2 report just came out. Fingers crossed this gets continued and expanded to more artists (and artforms). www.gov.ie/en/departmen...

Participants spend 11 hours per week more on their creative practice compared to the control group The Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, is today publishing a report analysing two years of the Basic Income for the Arts pilot data. This report builds upon existing research conducted by the Department. The report confirms previous findings that the BIA payment is having a sustained positive impact on recipients’ lives. Recipients are spending more time on their arts practice, report higher financial investment in their arts practice, and are producing more pieces of work compared to the control group. At the same time, BIA recipients are spending less time working in other sectors, which boosts sectoral retention.

This consultation ends tomorrow! I don't know how these stories have influenced the support, and there's been some pushback about us using the payment to live our lives, but that's exactly what it's for. There's also been some assumptions that we don't pay taxes on it which is definitely not true.

If any of you feel like taking a stab at this Japanese classic, Tony has done a great job of ranking various translations. He notes easy-entry versions, the more complete versions, and the more scholarly versions. A welcome guide to help you find what works for you.

Wonderful, thank you so much! Our go-to holiday food usually included smoked duck or chicken, and we love to do Texas-style brisket. I think we can manage the last one with some tweaks to the rub, depending on the wood. I appreciate your help!

Oh, I'm curious what wood you're using to smoke. We're from Texas, so our default was always mesquite. I'm not quite sure what to use here in Ireland. Growing up in the Midwest, we used applewood a lot. We want to start smoking again, but sourcing is a barrier.

I haven't been following along, but I see here you're using the Tyler translation. I studied and still use the Seidensticker one that I acquired in the early 90s. Are you familiar with it? I wonder how the two compare.

I considered "of course" as one way to fend off the "yes, but did you consider THIS??" readers. It reminds me of those old Westerns where a guy is riding a horse and shooting over his shoulder at his pursuers until they turn back. Fast and sloppy, but sending the message.

I remember things like the Procter & Gamble logo and the anti-rock church presentations from around 1983-ish, in evangelical churches in Ohio. By 1986, when I was 15 and much more aware, it seemed it was everywhere. Just a bonkers time.
