Went out to get a new license plate mount for the stupid plastic grill on my car (got new plates with one of my medals, 'cos I can). Everywhere, blue/green ribbons are tied to trees, signs, lights. There must've been a service. Sidewalks were full of parents holding sobbing children. #GunControl

Day three of end-o'-summer cold. Took a magnesium bath before bed, sweated it out under a wool blanket. That always helps. Currently plundering our tea collection, expect to deadline at least two boxes of remnants. Wanted to shock my metabolism with hot/cold shower, but someone was doing laundry.

Had a great time at the State Fair yesterday. Long day of it: showed up around 1 pm, didn't leave until we saw Los Lobos play at 8:30 pm. Thank gods for the motorcycle parking: cheaper, plentiful, easier to get to (and out of). The soft-serve beer was everything that was promised, and more.

Actually, they had another instructor discussing Old Norse myths, and he had to drop out, so the program manager suggested to me this audience would be interested in something else in that sphere. I just have to disclose that I'm going to be prejudiced in favor of the giantesses, not the gods.

I picked up the word "dryasdust" from a word-a-day desk calendar. My editing professor had never heard of it and disliked my use of it. I'll grant that it's old, peaked in 1895, but it's not unheard-of and I still like it. #vocabulary

I'm very much enjoying Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit. It's a slow-paced game with lovely music. You help ghosts reconcile with heavy unresolved issues, and then fish, forage, collect crawly things and skip rocks at clams. You make food and furniture, you raise pets. It's creepy and cute and calming.

Currently reading 'Unnatural Death' by Dorothy L. Sayers and it is lightly strewn with fantastic words and usage. Also notable is the coded lesbian representation, just a quiet "we exist" to the reader. I'm trusting the racist tropes were a subtle indictment of the British mindset of the era.

I enjoyed it, though even at the time I knew it was super-hokey. It's rather cutesy, tongue-in-cheek, the synthesized score disappointed me, but the performances kept me going. It is eminently quotable. I had read the book prior but don't think that influenced me. It's just candy.

Yes, I do something similar, it's a good trick. My own cats were much more fighty, Lexi only put up a little resistance, howled for about a minute, then resigned herself to her fate.

But we did it, I corralled Lexi into the carrier, the vet was very friendly and gentle, and Lexi was surprisingly well-behaved. Not just for the vaccinations but even for getting her nails trimmed. Don't have to worry about that for another year.

Busy morning: had to take my mom's cat, Lexi, to the vet for a grossly overdue checkup. Mom was reluctant to do so, because two years ago I brought her other cat, Gabby, in for signs of illness (leukemia) and she had to be put down. Lexi hasn't been warm to me ever since, so today was tricky.
