On the politics, that is. On the policy, I think he vastly underestimates how bad the situation is within the executive branch. It's by no means a settled question whether the government doing nothing is better than doing what it's currently doing.
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social)
This piece isn't bad, necessarily, it just falls into the pundit trap of "we can easily extrapolate from what came before to what will happen now". Nothing about the last 6 months leads me to believe that is a useful analytical framework in 2025.

Follow up: How are you thinking about the fact that most non-trivial phenotypes are then likely to be out of distribution with respect to the training data for the virtual labeling?

I feel like there hasn't been much innovation in web browsers lately, but this is a game changer for those of us with, um, tab hoarding disorder.
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
I would argue though, if you're investing in a massive screen anyway, you're back in the territory of "it's probably better to just train your own model to predict mitochondria directly from your label free image".
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social)
And this from Beth
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social)
Re: last thread, I've thought about it a bit more and I think this is a place where it could be helpful
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah I guess you could think of it like that, but then most models are gonna output a probability map anyway. For this I guess it would be interesting to see how it fails (ie what do generated florescence images where the model isn't sure look like).
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah see this is a good one. If you already have a trained classifier that operates on, say, mitochondrial images and you wanna screen a bunch of stuff, then getting a fake mito image for free is useful
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
But, as a bioimage analyst, I know the first thing people are gonna ask me to do is segment their fluorescence images so... Why not just predict the segmentation and save me the work. 😿😹
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
BUT I see a use case argument like the following. We have tons of pipelines and tools for dealing with fluorescence images. Few labs can train a model to extract whatever they want from their label free images, but any lab could pipeline a fluorescence image. So it opens up the downstream workflows
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
No I totally get that, my question is more a downstream one. What do you do with those images once you have them,. If you're predicting FL from label free, then necessarily all the downstream information you would get from your FL Images is already there in the label free. Just predict directly.
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
Want to be clear that I'm not criticizing the work here at all. It's super cool stuff. But it's good to have an open discussion about this before people use it irresponsibly.
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
But otherwise if you're just gonna segment and quantify the fluorescence images anyway, what's the point of the intermediate images? Just train to segment the label free!
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
But what are you doing in your screening? Like I said in another comment, if the point is to plug I to an existing screening pipeline that relies on florescence, I guess that's a use case.
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social) reply parent
But why not train directly to segment the label free? Why generate the intermediate image at all? Is the point that you can then use standard segmentation tools on the virtual image? I could kinda see that.
Damian Dalle Nogare (@damiandn.bsky.social)
Look, fine, this is a techically cool accomplishment, but I am still struggling to think of a use case for generating virtual fluorescent images. OK, you've got your fake fluorescence image. What are you gonna do with it? www.nature.com/articles/s42...
