Anyway JayK, we assumed nothing once we dicovered we could not use Jus sanguinis and followed the immigration laws. I understand now, it's even more difficult to obtain Italian citizenship due to the right wing fuckwits in power now whether you have ancestors or not.
There are companies that say they can obtain citizenship for you for a cost but be careful, many are fraudulent and could wind you up in an Italian jail. We got lucky and one of my relatives had a friend, common in Italy. If you have a friend that has a friend..yeah, typical😉
If your Italian ancestors renounced their Italian citizenship Jus sanguinis is void. My grandparents did (At the time, it was required) Navigating Italian immigration is no picnic but we did everything that was required of us. At one point, my wife was told she could go to jail.
You are correct to a point. When we left for Italy our intent was to apply for citizenship in Italy using "Jus sanguinis" (Right of blood). Had we been able to it would have been much easier to be granted citizenship. However, there is a catch that did not allow me to use Jus sanguinis.

No, I tried because after many years I discovered I still have family in Italy that I never knew I had. My grandparents immigrated in 1912, never spoke about Italy. I wanted to see where it was my Italian side came from and it was a wonderful 7 years.
