Whenever I point out this as a direct consequence of Primaries + First-past-the-post voting, and we urgently need Ranked Choice Voting… the ostensibly-democratic person I’m talking to says ā€œoh that’s impractical, what we really need is to screech louderā€ I feel like I’m taking crazy pills

This is why candidates in both US parties are against RCV It disadvantages them by letting the public first explore then express their actual preferences faithfully, thus preventing their current exploitation of the perverse effects of spoilers/cynicism I imagine the same might be true for Canada?
