I mean I get the practicalities of why these arguments are made, but to my mind even those practicalities boil down to "all power flows to sociopaths when the system itself is sociopathic". The very need to make such an argument seems like an indicator of a deeper rot.
When first encountering environmental economics as an undergrad my very first thought was "I don't know why we have to make an economic argument for why you shouldn't destroy something that you didn't create, that we can never replace, and that is a part of our shared heritage". Still don't.

So there are big financial incentives to replace domain expertise with wildly incompetent LLMs, and the decisions that will be made about this stuff will mostly be made by people who have insufficient understanding of either, with an industry that actively preys on their ignorance.
Thing 5: Budgets be tight, yo.
Thing 4: You cost more than even a premium AI subscription. You also show up late sometimes, have a family that demands your attention, and bring food that smells weird into the office. You complain about open offices and expect raises, and rudely demand to be treated with a minimum of dignity.
Combining 1-3: Your boss will think an LLM can do your job way before it actually can, if that's ever possible. The combined misunderstanding of what LLMs can do and lack of domain knowledge means they will often fail to understand the difference between your expertise and plausible bullshit.
Thing 3: Your boss probably does not have the knowledge in your specific domain that you do. Even if you're lucky enough to have a boss who is actually knowledgeable about anything, they probably hired you because they didn't have someone who knew, and could do, your job.
Thing I worry about number 2: Because people conflate style and substance, detection of LLM bullshit requires (often quite deep) knowledge of the specific domain. Anyone without that information will often take what the LLM says at face value because it is, by design, a PLAUSIBLE bullshit machine.
Thing I worry about number 1: LLMs are great at mimicking style but absolutely dogshit at factual information. This is very widely known but is also completely ignored by LLM evangelists and misunderstanding of this distinction is actively promoted by AI companies (e.g., @grok is this real).
First off, standard disclaimer that I don't hate AI in general and in fact use it in my work in many different ways, but 20 years of seeing machine learning misused in ecology (and misusing it some myself a few times) has made me very worried about what we're doing to our field.
I should be revising a paper right now but instead I'm just going to spend the morning being mad about this. It's basically everything that should worry us as scientists about the incorporation of LLMs into our field in one place, and I fear that it's a microcosm of things to come.

Further on this - it has generally been my experience that advertising any art/music/weird thing by using Blaze on Tumblr gets you about a hundred times the engagement per dollar that any other social media platform does. It's crazy how effective it is.
