I asked Google AI "What is the fastest way to resolve the angst of the human condition?" It said "there isn't one" and a bunch of other stuff. So I asked it a second and third time. On the second time it started spitting out random tiktok and YouTube vids of dubious quality.

Counter point: we can only make this claim as an anachronistic reading of scripture. Paul wasn't a Christian, or Judaic, as both didn't exist as distinct until 200 years after Paul's death. Prior to the 3rd century we have competing Jewish synagogues steadily evolving into Christian and Judaic.
Marcus Riedner π¨π¦ (@daraddishman.bsky.social) reply parent
Indeed. The Gospels are dangerous medicine. Elements of anti-Semitism are baked right into the literature. Particularly Matthew and John which utilize hyperpolemic as a rhetorical tool in the arguments between synagogues of the 1st century around Jesus of Nazareth. Paul's inconsistencies don't help.

That's a pretty dangerous theological proposition given the long history the Church has of brutally trying to kill its own members over which theocrat is in charge, which artwork is allowed, and so forth. Plus the Church's complicity with dictators, fascists, monarchs, and so forth.

I just want to take a moment to recognize that something called sodomy laws even exist, and in Kentucky they call anal sex "deviate sexual intercourse" as of 2021's updates to the laws. I don't get why they wouldn't simply call it anal sex and anal rape instead. π€·

So the expectation around media was that if something was taking longer to do, it should be better. If it cost more to make, it should be better. But these days that doesn't necessarily hold true, because of a host of changes since 1983. But psychologically people still think it should/does.
Marcus Riedner π¨π¦ (@daraddishman.bsky.social) reply parent
Ex2 the phrase means the same thing, but doesn't make contextual sense any more. But it used to. I am old, I was a kid when Sega and Famicom launched. The price points, dev time, product availability all made 3 month waits contextually similar to the 2 hour wait in Ex1.
Marcus Riedner π¨π¦ (@daraddishman.bsky.social) reply parent
I am not saying the phrase means something different. I am saying it no longer makes sense in certain contexts, but continues to be used. Ex1: Standing in a 2 hour line for ice cream, not worth the wait. Ex2: Holding on to your money for 3 months because a game was delayed, not worth the wait.

When you are used to drinking Niagara Falls it is frustrating when you have to pause to take a breath. It is, in a way, silly. But it is also a product of circumstance. Like trying to understand water as a fish
Marcus Riedner π¨π¦ (@daraddishman.bsky.social) reply parent
Like I said, once upon a time we didn't get an over abundance of entertainment goods and services. We had to wait for things. Now we don't, we have the opposite problem. So the phrase, which used to make sense, no longer does. And the situations are reversed, waiting feels ick when there is so much
Marcus Riedner π¨π¦ (@daraddishman.bsky.social) reply parent

The problem of suffering & evil (bad things happen to good people) is an unanswered question. There is no satisfying answer in scripture, and none in 2000 years of theology. It's still under debate, and answers range from "sin" to "the devil" to "freedom of choice" to "shrug emoji".

Heaven as a place you get whisked off to is a relatively late development (1200-1500 CE) and sits on the opposite side from bodily resurrection. It is predicated on dual pillars of your actions and the gift of grace. Both are in play, so when someone dies only they get to know how that worked out.

Predestination, which pertains to redemption and the resurrection, is accepted by 1/3 of Christian flavours as valid due to God's omni-status. 1/3 say it is bunk. 1/3 don't think it is an issue worth chasing.
