this is how cynical reason operates, which is why demonstrating that false claims are false gets us roughly nowhere. this is even so in the courts now, where we can see in real time judges and advocates essentially stipulating to each other that certain claims are false but go on anyway.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
hard disagree. there is NOTHING funny about Greenwald
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
in which case it is not really true that the false premises are or need to be believed by some plurality. they "work" despite not being held as valid by anyone. or *because* they are not so held.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
What role does belief actually play in this situation?
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
That leaves a lot out, and can include features that no one has in mind as part of capitalism
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
kicking off one of my courses tomorrow with the question of how to define "capitalism."

Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
n.b. that Kant says "if you have adhered strictly to the truth, then public justice cannot lay a hand on you, whatever the unforeseen consequence might be." but of course what's at stake is the *foreseeable* consequence. that is what makes me an accomplice to the murderer if I tell the truth.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
I wasn't addressing the specific example of the lie; I was pointing out that as far back as J.S. Mill, it's been recognized that Kant's ethics can't avoid consequentialist justifications. otherwise, his rational ethics turns immediately into irrational willfulness (and he knows it).
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
empirical consequences return with a vengeance though! he can't avoid justifying deontic constraint through a consequentialist detour.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent

I'm telling my son that when his research lab job ends due to Trump’s research cuts, he can join ICE and receive a signing bonus along with such fringe benefits as free travel and the right to beat up random strangers. The career prospects are literally endless, like the current administration.

Arteta is the guy who started 3 defensive midfielders and still lost. he's the guy who took 5 years to give in and sign a striker, but opts for tactics that leave him without service. #Arsenal will never win a major trophy under him. not this year, and not in 10 years.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent

honestly 3/32 is far more than I'd have guessed.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
yes, leave it to Arteta to stock the team with carbon copies of himself. that's why we can't score. and Zubimendi had little influence on our defense today. it was all the players around him.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
they needed both—and still do. Gyökeres is not PL level. and Ødegaard is useless
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
it's not a habit; it's the skill she was chosen for
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent

the important difference is that OG fascists tried to mobilize whole societies into their projects, while current ones prefer indifferent populations.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
so the opposition will lose by a small margin than before?
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social)
there's been a lot said about Trump's supposed demagogic or charismatic or populist appeal. but the real story seems to be the political effect of immense American indifference to him. it's not the people he's mobilized; it's the ones who are too busy, too tired, too distracted, and too apathetic.

Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
yeah idk what you're on about. ICE has been detaining native-born citizens, and even deporting some. Miller has been demanding that they meet his insane quota, so it would be logical to focus on places with large target populations. the fact that ICE is less aggressive here is telling.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
And your point would be? ICE is grabbing anyone who remotely fits this racial profile. And of course there are tens of thousands of undocumented people in this city. But ICE is less active here, because the environment is much more challenging for them
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
how exactly would endorsing Trump's whims again "cook" the court? its credibility rests entirely on those whims.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
Hochul might say some stuff, but the real pushback would come from New Yorkers themselves. there's a reason ICE isn't kidnapping as many of us as it is in other places, despite the vast number of Latinos in the city.
Michael Kaplan (@differance.bsky.social) reply parent
choosing Chicago was stupid, but don't kid yourself about New York. that would not go well for Trump.
