Oof. The Dems need to stop pretending, based on some imaginary focus group, that there’s some common ground with Trump. The key is to fight everywhere. You should go study Neville Chamberlain’s attempt at “common ground.” It didn’t end well for his historical reputation. Or the world.

They usually land on good, well-reasoned decisions, but they're also often slow to reach those decisions. They might allow a stay so that they have time to deliberate. And then the GOP is sure to introduce more bills targeting the Supreme Court in the next session—maybe even in the special session.
David (@dkuofu.bsky.social) reply parent
That's correct, and then the legislature will appeal saying they had done their best to comply, and they weren't given enough time to respond, and it's all unfair, etc. They'll try to get an immediate stay to block the court imposed map until the appeal goes through. The big game is delay tactics.
David (@dkuofu.bsky.social)
There's an independent commission map with an "urban/rural split" that they could adopt tomorrow. The difference is, instead of cracking Salt Lake, it keeps Salt Lake County in one district, Utah County in another, Weber & Davis in another, and Tooele County in the fourth district.
David (@dkuofu.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe we'll get a true 4-corners intersection for the districts
David (@dkuofu.bsky.social) reply parent
Presumably, if their map is rejected by the judge and they don't have a replacement in time, that would be the result as well. But they'll absolutely sue and try to get a stay during their appeal.
Schrödinger's President (@darinself.com) reposted
They're still going to gerrymander things. They basically said so in their statement because they want "urban and rural voters in the same districts". They're going to try to run out the clock by putting forward a gerrymandered map.
David (@dkuofu.bsky.social) reply parent
They will submit them on day 29.75, then when they get rejected they will complain and say they complied with the court order and the judge is being unfair, and they should get a stay on appeal because this "activist judge" (appointed and unanimously confirmed by a GOP majority) is picking on them.
David (@dkuofu.bsky.social) reply parent
The commission even had an urban/rural map! The difference was it kept SLCO intact and split at the border between Salt Lake and Utah counties.
Nate Blouin (@nateforutah.bsky.social) reposted
So yeah the "urban and rural" thing is just a pretense to split up urban voters in one of the most urbanized states in the country, because urban voters tend to be more liberal than rural voters. That's it.
