My kids learned this in 6th grade science. Most species reach an equilibrium with birth rate and death rate matching and stabilizing the population. Species that keep growing unchecked eventually suffer a catastrophic loss of population once resources are exhausted. Hi Humans!!!!

Medical Journals are a business. Traditionally you would subscribe to ones relevant to your practice or use your hospital library. There are also open access journals for all. The publisher makes money by charging the author(s) a fee. These are generally lower tier journals but still peer reviewed.
During the initial Covid outbreak (before vaccines) we made the decision to protect our pregnant residents from active COVID cases. We knew then that this infection was particularly rough on pregnant women. It’s fair to say that those high risks persist if you are unvaccinated.

As an interesting aside, when on a dive trip in Bali years ago, my guide shared that babies on the island were not named or welcomed to the community until 3 months old. That’s because pre-vaccines, too many died in the first three months. It was easier to grieve if they were not named.

Measles powerfully suppresses the immune system. I still remember the San Diego 1990 outbreak. As it was I was doing my Peds ID residency rotation. I remember my old attending commenting that back in the day you would have a measles outbreak then two weeks later the Tuberculosis wards would fill up

Also, I was in residency during the 1990 SoCal measles outbreak and saw first hand how sick these kids are (we had one fatality in SD county) I use that experience to convince parents on the severity of the disease
I understand the anger at the parents. However, over the many years of counseling parents to vaccinate (and I am usually successful), I rarely if ever get the impression they don’t care about their children. They have been lied to and mislead by a culture that places internet opinions over science.
I maintain compassion for the parents who are probably consumed with grief and guilt. Over my many years of counseling parents, I have found that antivax parents really think they are doing the right thing for their child’s health. I condemn those that feed them the conspiracy theories and lies.
This is truly heartbreaking but predictable. Americans have no collective memory on how devastating measles can be, because of the success of vaccination. This is not a harmless childhood infection and more deaths and neurological morbidity will occur. If you are not vaccinated get it done ASAP

The vitamin K thing has been around a long time. An old study which has since been disproved tried to link it to leukemia. Vitamin K for newborns was started in 1961. The AAP looked at US leukemia rates in 1946 compared to 1976 (30 year bracket) There was no difference in incidence over that span.
Most common things I saw were bacteremia, meningitis and periorbital cellulitis. Most scary would be epiglottitis which can cause an acute and catastrophic closure of the airway. One case my intern year but I wasn’t on service for that one
I have to go back to Hep B. I thought the republicans wanted to protect newborns. A baby born to a mother with Hep B has a >90% chance of getting infected. This can almost 100% be prevented with a shot of Hep B immune globulin and the Hep B vaccine within 12 hours of birth
I can keep going. No one mentions Haemophilis (the Hib vaccine). When I was an intern, I saw many cases of very aggressive, invasive infections in infants. Once the vaccine was approved to 2 months I never saw another case.
Also fun fact: the Aedes mosquito which transmits yellow fever and dengue can now be found in parts of Florida, Texas and Southern California. Will likely expand north with climate change and warming
Good Lord, Hep B too!? Hep B only exists in humans, there is no reservoir so a vaccine campaign could eradicate it. Hep B can cause acute fulminant hepatitis, chronic hepatitis or make you a carrier. The last category puts you at lifelong risk for hepatocellular carcinoma

This seat will flip. With each batch of new tallied votes Gray closes. The gap was about 2000 votes on the prior update (when ~84-86% counted) Now it’s only 227 with about 8000 more votes to count (currently 96% reporting)
