I’m an AI skeptic in so many ways but some of the discourse is very thin. It’s the usual “this thing is bad so using my critical facilities isn’t important” vibe that so many of us fall back on. My neuro d brain gets so frustrated.

Yes! I agree with that. They can help us to keep going and feel less alone. Which is very important. But imo protests today are rarely part of a larger successful project to build and wield power.

I have a hunch that the discourse’s awfulness is inversely proportional to the power we have. When we have no external agency we turn on each other. So much of left internal conflict is driven by this.

My ideal end state is a sketch of what online (left) political discourse is and is not and to imagine ways of creating better and more productive behaviors and interactions online.
Further: the two party system, the imagined electorate, discourse vs politics vs organizing. Also I suspect there’s some well understood psychosocial dynamics at play of which I know not.

I find that I do sufficiently trust googles AI results for some kinds of things but not others. Broad overviews I trust, specifics I don’t. “What is linear algebra used for”: trust “When did the A’s last make the playoffs”: don’t trust
The shower knob analogy is interesting. It highlights part of the core strangeness about LLMs: unpredictable failure states. How LLMs fail is known, technically, but it’s hard to reason about when you’re actually using the tech.

I disagree actually. I think protest usually are against something and don’t articulate what they’re in favor of, or what a better world would look like. I do think protests express a deep desire for a better world, but there’s rarely a larger vision that is spoken aloud.
