As a result of filtering everything that happens in American politics through the lens of “They represent authentic America, we are imposing liberals who need to plead with the Volk,” Democratic leaders constantly lend legitimacy to the Right’s claims and sabotage their own response.

I’m an AI skeptic in so many ways but some of the discourse is very thin. It’s the usual “this thing is bad so using my critical facilities isn’t important” vibe that so many of us fall back on. My neuro d brain gets so frustrated.

This has the shape of an insightful critique but actually just restates Microsoft’s product choice. Excel is already used for all kinds of things that aren’t math, and this is a tool that serves those uses.

IMO in the the earlier meme days you’d see a lot of those memes, these days I rarely see them, even the Wojack one or whatever. True image memes like that are a much smaller part of the discourse than they used to be. In fact I’d say we’ve largely moved past the image meme as language moment!

drew beck (@drewbeck.bsky.social)
I have a hunch that the discourse’s awfulness is inversely proportional to the power we have. When we have no external agency we turn on each other. So much of left internal conflict is driven by this.

My ideal end state is a sketch of what online (left) political discourse is and is not and to imagine ways of creating better and more productive behaviors and interactions online.
drew beck (@drewbeck.bsky.social) reply parent
Further: the two party system, the imagined electorate, discourse vs politics vs organizing. Also I suspect there’s some well understood psychosocial dynamics at play of which I know not.

Stewing on a thread about Bernie Bros, resistance Dems and Posting; how we group large groups of posters together and respond to them en mass, then hold them accountable for later (possibly hypocritical) posting behavior. Also includes: lumping, quantum mechanics, the Fourier transform.

I’ve been to loads of protest and I’m still not sure what they accomplish, on their own. We need to build and flex actual power in order to get people to show up, and in order to make the change we need.

The tool builds trust in ways that are orthogonal to its actual trustworthiness. LLM’s confidence and facility with language are not correlated with their likelihood of saying true things. A kind of sociopathic behavior.
drew beck (@drewbeck.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d guess everybody develops some intuitive sense of what their tools are good for and not good for. But our intuitions are wrong when we use heuristics from human interactions to judge a computer.

The shower knob analogy is interesting. It highlights part of the core strangeness about LLMs: unpredictable failure states. How LLMs fail is known, technically, but it’s hard to reason about when you’re actually using the tech.

drew beck (@drewbeck.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it’s a good social pattern and we should be glad to use it (even if it makes us feel weird at first!). “How to do short text social media” is still being figured out; norms can and should change.

Apartheid and occupation generally only end or begin to end when there is an assessment by the occupier that the costs outweigh the benefits— and Israel has never been made to reap the costs in the same ways South Africa was. It is more or less as simple as that. No one is making them choose.

5. It has been centuries since any one human could know everything that is known; understand everything that is understood. This is a remarkable power of science. We delegate trust and authority to experts as internally established in ways that are remarkably resilient to mistakes and malfeasance.

The Bad Poster is a core role on these platforms, providing as much pleasure as the good posters, but in schadenfreude-tinged ways. Though I think most Bad Posters don't last long, they flame out or step back after too much negative attention. They get indignant and eventually realize they can't win

I disagree actually. I think protest usually are against something and don’t articulate what they’re in favor of, or what a better world would look like. I do think protests express a deep desire for a better world, but there’s rarely a larger vision that is spoken aloud.
