YES! Uncap the House. 1 Rep per 50k people. Should also declare all states to be "provinces" then remake "states" as simple Senate districts within them that must be 1 to 4 M people. If your province doesn't have 1M people, band with another to make a "state".
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
And by making the Cons sue we 1) get things done while they wait for the ruling and the appeal [because no more national injunctions!] and 2) get the SCOTUS to eventually rule.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
The forgive student loans one especially. Because it is literally a zero-cost thing. The only ones getting forgiveness were those who had made payments in excess of their original principal. That means all forgiveness was doing was saying it was paid in full and magic interest would be gone.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, Scalia literally made up the concept of "prefratory, non-operating clause" out of thin air. And something that apparently *only* exists in the 2A.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
That was the best part!
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I did that once for a conference in Europe (because I couldn't take a poster tube). There was actually someone who walked by it and *scoffed*.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
They just want folks to die
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
We just start moving more things into direct costs. PITA for everyone but I'm sure the grants office can come up with some per-sq-ft utilities numbers and percentage of Admin Asst time.

Also, when funded properly public schools are far and above most privates. Dittos hospitals and the USPS.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Unions don't take away the ability to fire. They take away the ability to fire without cause (as in the very scene here). A manager only has to document that the worker is not doing what they were contracted to do. EVERY bad employee not fired is ENTIRELY because a manager failed their job.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Where do you think owners get their cash?!? Do you think *they* are working and creating it themselves?
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
It doesn't really need any updates, just a reversal of Hellar that made shit up about it. Every ruling before that used the entire sentence: it's a right to be in your state miliita.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
And "bear arms" means to serve in a military force. The right was to have guns in order to be a citizen soldier in your [state] militia. It's a single thing. If you're not in your state militia, then it doesn't apply to you.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Had a student drop by my office last week (she wanted to geek out with me over her new Star Wars merch) then told me she tested positive. UGH! So far I'm still negative. *whew*
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Jan and Feb are really cold months so you gotta do something to keep warm.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Workers literally created *all* the wealth being used for the capital investments.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
No. The point was, there are *more* things that *ought* to be legally labeled as wage theft because they are, intrinsically things that take from workers.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah, pedantry. Got it.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I see *that* mistake soooo many times. If had a nickel for each one, I'd be rich.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
And even that idea was a lie. It was some off the cuff addition made by a SCOTUS underling to some old ruling and has simply never been questioned since. CEOs should never be considered fiduciaries. They are managers.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
No company *ever* needs "profit". If all workers are compensated, why is there *need* for more? Even if you want to argue excess for growth, *that* isn't profit, that's investment.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Real capitalism still says worker labor output is owned by someone else.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
You and they are both correct
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I can agree with most of that. What I tell students is "facts" are data; stuff you measure. My shirt is blue. That's a fact. *Why* it is blue is science. We work to build a model for that. Models that remain, that aren't disproven, become theories.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
No, appeal to authority *may* be a logical fallacy. It is *if* your only argument is "this one guy said so". If the "guy" actually is an authority in the area being discussed (especially if that authority is backed up by years of vetted work), then, no, it's not a fallacy.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Trans people never killed 1M people by taking away food aid. But tump and musk did.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Make all current states into "provinces" then define "states" as Senate districts within (or among) provinces that are at least 2M people and no more than 5M people. If your province is <1M, your province must join with another (or others) until you reach 1M to make a state.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, when they have the presidency, too. At that point, +10
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, linking to someone else's shitty misinterpretation is not a rebuttal.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Can I enter to have you give an econ lecture in my Intro Astronomy class...?
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
In reality it means USSR, PRC, etc. etc. were not communist.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Communism: classless, stateless society wherein the workers own and control the means of production.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Could it have to do with the gifts they get?
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Could it be that the media creates this belief through selective reporting? City crime gets front page, every day but rural crime (which is, per capita, *higher*) doesn't.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Correction: fascism.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
But... to MAGA...?
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
That still raises the question on how MAGAts would be able to tell...
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
A single white space (or maybe just a ~) would allow the submission to go through.

Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent

Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I absolutely do. Having served on *several* faculty hiring committees.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
It isn't. Hiring in the past was never about merit, either. Because for the longest time, "white man" was a prerequisite.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I've been saying that for over a decade now. It would at least be honest.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
And *that* is also a lie. DEI is not quotas. Like... at all. DEI wasn't even affirmative action (which *also* wasn't quotas).
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
That's still "victim blaming". So, no, our activism cannot make someone a fascist. They choose that.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
YOU are the one reframing DEI in ideological BS.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
You clearly don't understand DEI
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
"Virtue signaling" is a phrase tossed out by Cons who will only ever do good when others can see it and praise them thinking everyone else is as horrible as they are.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
DEI is only "political" because fascists want to idiotically claim it's "reverse racism". Do, no, DEI does *not* break the Civil Rights Act. At all. The 6/9 of SCOTUS that may shoot it down are political fascists (see first line).
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Not really, no. Communism is a stateless, classless society wherein the workers own the factories. Government in bed with corporate power like this is fascism.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Wouldn't "all white guys" be NHL?
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
We are truly in a horrible fascist hell when a white supremacist can sue for "racism" because we want to be more inclusive.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
In grad school, back in the 90s, we had to roll our own code (Numerical Recipes was allowed) to RK-4 integrate Lane-Emden for any n. It was like a 1.5 week assignment! These days I show my *undergrad* stellar course a multitude of solutions in about 5 seconds using Mathematica.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
From masked thugs. Nothing to make us assume they were trump's. That's part of the entire problem.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm reminded of www.biblegateway.com/passage/?sea... but then, trump doesn't even really *profess* to follow Jesus.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm really looking forward to the day all that tacky faux gold shit is taken down.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Right?!? This is why I'll never understand the Con assertion that the EC is the thin line between "republic" and "MoB rUlE!" (and that's ignore the fact they don't know what "republic" means...)
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Again, how is this at all functionally different from the EC version? States report EC votes or states report actual votes. That's it. That's the *only* difference. To claim that every state has to be identical under one but not the other is just unsupported assertion.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent

Yeah, that was... amazing he was so honest in his racism.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
This is one area where math and science cross over with art and music. The number of folks who will claim "I just don't have the talent..." As someone who teaches math and science it is *so* frustrating. I want to yell that *nobody* has talent at it, that it *all* takes work and effort.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Right?!? Just like every other endeavor. Art, math, science, music, football (either flavor), etc. etc. etc.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
No it doesn't. No more than the current method. Instead of reporting EC totals, states just report actual totals. No other changes needed.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup. The Constitution is clear, as have been several SCOTUS rulings*, elections are a state issue with the fed only touching on it under the umbrella of the equal protection clause. That is, giving everyone in the USA the same right to voting access. [*With the exception of Bush v Gore]
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social)
โThis has been the playbook all along โ to issue things that I suspect the administration knows will be overturned by a court, but it doesnโt matter, because issuing it in the first place has the intended chilling effect,โ added Gellman-Beer www.chronicle.com/article/coll...
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm a huge fan of proportional representation! That said, I do also understand the desire for a local person to be the local rep. So we need the House to be FAR more granular: 1 Rep per 50k people.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Uncap the House. 1 Rep per 50k people. Real representation; extremely difficult to gerrymander and/or buy.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed; she was an idiot but they were misrepresenting their product. Sue them into oblivion as a object lesson.

Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
1) Uncap the House; 1 Rep per 50k people 2) DC and PR statehood 3) Declare current states to be "provinces" then have them draw up "states" that are Senate districts of 1 to 5 M people. If a province can make a 1M person "state", it can join with neighbors to make one.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. All borders are bonkers. We are all human and the planet belongs to us all. The only reason the UN is based on confederation (with some nations more equal than others) is purely political and partly based on the fact that oligarchies exist.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
Their biggest failure was not erasing *every* last vestige of the old confederation. The bonkers idea that completely arbitrary land areas should have equal representation should have been a red line.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
You found my button...
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
We could just uncap the House; 1 Rep per 50k people. Super hard to gerrymander that.
Dave Klassen (@drklassen.bsky.social) reply parent
The number 1 job of the next Dem congress is to uncap the House: 1 Rep per 50k people. Gerrymandering and buying them off because much, much harder.
