I got a new research professorship (endowed chair) at my school - long story, but at my institution we rotate through them every four years - so I updated by LinkedIn profile with the new title, and now I'm getting DMs congratulating me from random people I do not know AT ALL. Kinda annoying.

I've been reading this book for the first time, and I wish I could talk with someone familiar with the last few chapters. I really liked the first several chapters but I'm finding the last few chapters very frustrating.

When I argue for more robust AA in faculty meetings, others seem to assume, incorrectly, that I'm basing this either on wanting diversity or trying to remedy past injustices. I don't think either of those is a good argument in the long term.
As the panel highlights, lower courts are in accord here. & recall that Justice Kavanaugh indicated just two months ago that the Supreme Court should take up one of these cases in the next year or two (www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...). It's not clear what benefit further "percolation" brings.

To my eye, it looks like Chicago shootings are more than 50% lower than in 2022 peak with no sign that the sharp reduction in shootings is slowing. Still too many shootings plaguing certain communities, but Chicago seems to have effective strategies for curbing shootings without a military invasion.
