I will say Nate Silver is probably a good Rorschach - if you find yourself nodding along to his, ah, insights, Xitter will feed you much more of that sort of thing that Bluesky will.
Engruntled Interloper (@duplicateuserid.bsky.social) reply parent
Your "bluesky experience" is chosen by you. You choose your follows. Yes, there's a "culture", or sorts, but what you see here will vary super widely as you vary your follows.

I've been getting weird, EA-ish but-not-really-but-kinda vibes out of this all along. The money required to bootstrap their accumulation of Professional Think-and-Talk types this has alone is enough to give pause, even before the vaguely culty stuff.

As a getting-older, never-married urbanite who has been reading books in coffee shops for about three decades now, I endorse this take.

My family contains several nurses, I grew up learning from people with no respect for doctors. I have lied before for specific reasons. That works best if you can script it with someone who knows diagnostics for your issue. If you try to wing it without some knowledge, they will likely catch it.

Having gone to high school in the south, I believe the southern aristocratic-culture should have been crushed; the victors were way too sympathetic. I believe you have do everything you can to avoid war. But if forced, you make sure it doesn't happen again.

Their training was clearly incompetent - they are really bad at subduing someone, as that out-of-his-depth fuckup illustrated with the frustrated threat. A publicly funded torture team operating at the outside edge of their competence.

Roberts isn't a mark, he's the inside man. His problem now is Trump is too impatient. Roberts needs Trump to not ignore him until it is too late to do anything about it. Running a scam with a mental 4 year hold is hard.

Those willing to take this risk personally could ask their HR to zero out their deductions. But I really think what this illustrates is one of the limits of individual action. These are collective action problems - they're hard to achieve until they're almost inevitable. Start smaller.

No public company exec is going to embrace being sued until their name is used as a cliche, and I'd guess the number of owners of private companies willing to risk their firms doing this is approximately zero.

I'm always confused by claims of secret cliques. If you're being cliquey and exclusive, that implies you're turning people away from your cool club, usually because you want to seem cool and exclusive. So being secret about the whole thing seems a bit counterproductive.

Depends on what you mean. Your body is chock-full of closed-loop systems. It is a marvel. Living your life is mostly open-loop, constrained by all the other uncontrolled meatbags you're bumping in to constantly.
Engruntled Interloper (@duplicateuserid.bsky.social) reply parent
I dunno. Maybe I'm missing something, but "open loops tend to degrade to hysterisis" seems unremarkable.

I don't think this is that interesting a result, even if we accept robots as valid human stand-ins. Playing games with feed structure is not going to eliminate conflict; put another way, expecting technical solutions to social problems is a category error.

Just finished _The Bezzle_ by Cory Doctorow. Solid light thriller-ish novel. It touches on a lot of my nerdier interests, and given the real places used I'm surprised I didn't see him taking notes for the book. A lot more fun than you might expect with an accountant-protagonist.

I feel like the core problem people are trying to get at is, polling was never some silver bullet, and as currently practiced, is extremely broken. Yet politicians still depend heavily on polling because there is nothing to replace it, and of course continue to misuse polling in all the usual ways.

That's been the go-to for decades. When I was in high school, a nearby town made a run on their library, very similar to what's going on now. A group of concerned parents reported the Bible and a bunch of bible-related texts, as well as basically everything in the romance section.
