My position on the "doomsday" risk of superhuman AGI is that if IQ offered you a decisive advantage, the world would be run by nerds. I think it's essentially a geek power fantasy. The returns on puzzle-solving skills rapidly diminish past some modest threshold.

Forgot to add that when confronted with highly-qualified women candidates, the American voting public not only chose a man, they rejected the women for a SERIAL RAPIST. Twice. There is no greater misogynist FU than that. Both times, a crystal clear message to women: know your place.

Yeah, gotta agree with you: "unnecessary politeness" will be the end of us in the US; it has destroyed our journalism and civil society, because we simply don't confront liars and charlatans. We need to import some Dutch journalists--like a Marshall Plan for information infrastructure in the US.

That Trump and Trumpism are fascist doesn’t explain the sheer vandalism of unleashing mass murdering mayhem via RFK to replace medical/scientific institutions of immense value and prestige with medieval peasant superstitions. That is a criminal madness facilitated by but above and beyond fascism.

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

Are you British? I've never seen the expression "cat that ate the candy." In the US, it's "the cat that got the cream" or "the cat who ate the canary." What will the cat get next?

MAGA as masculinity tantrum. They're showing dominance by marking their territory, like tomcats pissing in your shoes. bsky.app/profile/ebha...

Having to re-discover the territory explored by feminist authors of the 1960s & 70s--as if the works of Betty Friedan & Andrea Dworkin were cryptic texts written in Linear B--is extremely tiresome. The success of RWers in destroying even the memory of the feminist movement is very dispiriting.

For some reason, the ones I think will haunt me the most are the bright young men who proudly told me they cast their first-ever vote for the convicted rapist and felon, and the naturalized immigrants who told me they would never vote for a woman under any circumstances.

Joni Mitchell deserved it at least as much as Dylan.

And it won't be named for the right Flo, either! Still can't believe she's gone and it's been nearly 30 years.

Have you been back? There's an incredibly museum now at Checkpoint Charlie, showing the insane risks people were willing to take in order to escape the DDR.

Once again illustrating that while Trump cannot be shamed, he CAN be manipulated into doing nearly anything by offering him *status.* HRC nominates him for the Nobel? Suddenly Trump swings from "Lock her up!" to "Let's be pals!" We should exploit this vulnerability more. bsky.app/profile/ebha...

With you. I don't think there's any precedent in US history for this. I'm honestly sorry to be alive to witness it.

Waiting like a teenager for his prom date & clapping his teeny little hands for the bloody dictator... Is this the most humiliating spectacle ever created by a US president? __ Yes __ Hell yes Bonus: If you lived through the Cold War, does this image make your head spin? __ Yes __ Kill me now
