I’m curious how much welfare chauvinism was the result of expanding the social safety net to Black people in the Civil Rights era. I know it’s not new per se. Also I’m very excited for @juliaazari.bsky.social ‘s new book on Backlash Presidents, which I think is part of the conversation.

It's not an American phenomenon: it's a human phenomenon studied all over the world. And it's not a racial phenomenon: welfare chauvinism can be triggered by any in-group/out-group categorization; these days, it's most often about immigrants, globally.
