The weather can obviously be quite variable, but if Zugspitze is at all representative, early October in the Bavarian Alps certainly has the potential to be mind-blowingly beautiful, as well.

Haha, yes, now that you say so, I am definitely not surprised.

Whoa, that sounds amazing! I dunno, maybe you can swing this one on short notice, given that experience.
Eugene Navakas (@enavakas.bsky.social) reply parent
No personal experience with this, sadly, though we did really enjoy visiting Garmisch-Partenkirchen and taking the mountain train up Zugspitze.

Oh my god, it's clearly time for a Hot Ones crossover. It's the dog days, so ring the dinner bell and muster the NBA crew for a hot-takes-while-eating-increasingly-spicy-wings episode where the capsaicin flows faster than than the ability to self-regulate. Thank me later, and don't touch your eyes.

Just adored the Copenhagen Trilogy--read for the first time last year, while actually in Denmark. Very different sort of work (and hardly obscure), but I also really enjoyed Johannes V. Jensen's The Fall of the King, if you're looking for more classic Danish fiction.

You're 100% right that nowhere is immune to collapse, and I'm certainly not arguing not to fight. I just don't feel great about asking others, especially those with limited power, to stay and suffer for the sake of principle. I mean, some places are objectively worse for some people.
Eugene Navakas (@enavakas.bsky.social) reply parent
I hear you, and obviously there's a spectrum of wealth and assholishness. I'm just also personally seeing actual, traumatic life disruption where people can no longer safely practice their professions. Are they refugees? No. Do I think poorly of them for trying to leave? Also, no.
Eugene Navakas (@enavakas.bsky.social) reply parent
This seems unnecessarily harsh to me. Not interested in arguing, just wanted to register my disagreement--especially since we're so often on the same page.
Eugene Navakas (@enavakas.bsky.social) reply parent
As you see, I'm a huge advocate, unsettlingness and all. I'm so grateful to the professors who brought his work into our classroom, as well as just for the shared space to read and discuss and absorb. I hope you do read his stuff someday!

Oof, I'm sorry you were blindsided. It's so viscerally sharp. Can you imagine watching in NYC in 1964, when it premiered? Jones/Baraka truly is a writer who made a deep and lasting impression on me. His (non-fiction) book Blues People is another knockout, though it's been a long time since I read.
Eugene Navakas (@enavakas.bsky.social) reply parent
So fantastic! I haven't seen the film version, but I read the play in college and it's stuck with me ever since. Baraka wrote it as LeRoi Jones, before he changed his name.

Ooh, I love that you write about the city's cemeteries! I find Mt. Carmel especially fascinating for its oddball combination of Catholicism and connection to the history of organized crime. Even wrote a poem about it myself at one point, though sadly as yet unpubbed.

That said, I also really value the folks I've interacted with there. Lots of good conversation over time, though largely topic specific--photography, film/TV, etc.

Yup, I'm still there, though pseudonymously. (Certainly happy to find you and say hi, if you'd like.) I personally don't mind the multiple servers--there are feeds that let you interact across most everything--but in truth I find this place a little more congenial. More active, less serious.

Cliché, sure, but truly, try to relax and be yourself--you're meeting a potential friend and creative ally. Share a story that makes you you; connect it to a script you're especially proud of; listen, listen, listen. What are *their* dream projects? Do they have any advice for you specifically?

Aside from Richard Smith being awesome, the other thing I take from this video is about the way art works. The music industry is a mess of commercial fakery but that never eliminates entirely the space for passion and talent. Just like how ceramic artists exist in a world where Ikea sells crockery.

I think this is especially true for specific high praise. There's a ton of incentive to be generally complimentary and non-confrontational, but only the true sociopaths will *do extra work* to spell out praise they don't believe.
