This was one of the best/worst experiences of my life. I run to feel, experience, and test myself. I got all of that. Disappointment, sure, but so much joy, gratitude, and pride.

This is true in every area of life. We look at successful people, and the final adjustments and tweaks they make to go from 98% to 99%, and think we can get to 99% by adopting those tweaks. But we neglect the big, steady, hard work required to get from 0% to 98%.

The most fundamental mistake I see scientists make - and I think it drives a lot of basic worldview distress - is that policy should be driven exclusively (or at least primarily) by empiricism.

And actuation of it should override the lock. Child locking doors in the back seat are a challenge - these days we have the tech to disable the feature if someone heavier than say, 80lbs, is in the back seat.

I think all doors should have an obvious physical release mechanism that can be intuitively used in the dark, without power. Anything else is absurdly, and unnecessarily, dangerous.

Becoming a Professional Engineer (certified PE) can probably be done in 5 years if you do nothing else, but it strictly requires 4 years supervised work, after completing the FE exam, which you cannot take until you have a BSc.
Classical apprenticeships have traditionally been very very long. But finishing one and becoming a “master” tradesman was not necessary to becoming independent.
It’s just a library process. Doesn’t matter who YOU are.

You can go to your own public or university library and request papers through inter-library loan. I’ve done it dozens of times and never once failed to get a paper free.
Readers. ILL, direct request, institutional posts. Almost nothing is actually behind a paywall if you’re industrious. And you don’t have to resort to illegal file sharing.
The issue of access did not need a fix. People were just too lazy to use the many available options for free legal access.
I didn’t. I just assumed I didn’t understand the science as I haven’t taken biology since high school.
I don’t know what half those words mean in context.
That’s not to defend the traditional publishing model either. That also sucks. But the “fix” solved zero real problems, and created many many new ones.
The entire OA scam was perfectly obvious from the outset. Invented by self-aggrandizing perversely-incented radicals, using egalitarian language they never believed in as cover to deflect criticism - pushing for an ethic that never mattered in the first place.
