I am the dumbest motherfucker on this planet. I didn’t get my buckle at the Oregon 200 because of wildfire. So, I’m taking another swing at the Ultra Fest. 100 miles. 30 hour time limit. In two and a half weeks.

This was one of the best/worst experiences of my life. I run to feel, experience, and test myself. I got all of that. Disappointment, sure, but so much joy, gratitude, and pride.

Frankly, while ecologically northern California is welcome, politically, we could frankly do without a lot of it.

A week and a half post-race, still some battle damage, reflecting the effort of 150 miles. But my capsulitis is amazingly better, and overall my feet held up really well.

This is true in every area of life. We look at successful people, and the final adjustments and tweaks they make to go from 98% to 99%, and think we can get to 99% by adopting those tweaks. But we neglect the big, steady, hard work required to get from 0% to 98%.

The most fundamental mistake I see scientists make - and I think it drives a lot of basic worldview distress - is that policy should be driven exclusively (or at least primarily) by empiricism.

Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent
“Barrier too high” sounds like my original point. Readers have access. It’s just not as quick and easy as they want. I don’t have much sympathy for that - not enough to warrant implementing OA and it’s assspciated negatives and externalities.
Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent

Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent

Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent
You can go to your own public or university library and request papers through inter-library loan. I’ve done it dozens of times and never once failed to get a paper free.
Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent
Readers. ILL, direct request, institutional posts. Almost nothing is actually behind a paywall if you’re industrious. And you don’t have to resort to illegal file sharing.
Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent
The issue of access did not need a fix. People were just too lazy to use the many available options for free legal access.
Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent

Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent

Eugene Day, DSc (@eugenedaydsc.bsky.social) reply parent
The entire OA scam was perfectly obvious from the outset. Invented by self-aggrandizing perversely-incented radicals, using egalitarian language they never believed in as cover to deflect criticism - pushing for an ethic that never mattered in the first place.
