Imagine the message it would send if Gary Lineker won 'Presenter of the Year' at this year's National Television Awards Standing up for compassion & the right to speak out And, the feathers it would ruffle My lovely followers, you know what to do: nationaltvawards.com/vote šļø Deadline: 12th Sep

I hope itās true. They deserve each other.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes they are the actual uniparty.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
The point is that nobody is going to take advice from someone whose tactics resulted in a defeat.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
That may or may not be true, but as it stands Walz wasnāt on the winning side.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Problem is that Tim Walz lost.

Perhaps I'm clutching at straws but I remain sure that Farage doesn't want to be PM and so he is now pushing policies he expects to be vote losers.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
I have sent my first ever complaint to the BBC as a result of this.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Did you notice the choice of colours at the presentation were red, white and black?
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm fairly sure that Farage doesn't want to win the next election so this might be a way of ensuring that Reform Ltd end up a close second.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh? Should I have made more?
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks. I have just made my first ever complaint to the BBC.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Red white and black theme. Hmm.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
I think thatās what it is. Heās so dim that he doesnāt realise that the USSR he grew up to fear doesnāt exist any more.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
The irony is that with the constant shuffling of personnel between them, there is a good case to be made that the Conservatives and Reform Ltd are the uniparty.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
I've been engaging with Mr Cupis about his full throated support for Israel. He won't hear a bad word said about them.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
While I agree that some of their policies are bizarre, we shouldn't forget that the weekly scandals, splits and resignations of the last government have largely disappeared.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Rather than trying to appeal to people who would never vote for them in a million years Labour might try to appeal to people who would rather like to vote for them again. Just a thought.

LATEST: An elderly man appears to have broken onto the roof of a DC building and is gesticulating and shouting at people below.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
I've heard several rumours that Farage doesn't want to be PM under any circumstances. So I wonder if he will 'ensure' an implosion.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Iām blaming Corbyn because heās not content with delivering Brexit and a Johnson landslide. He appears to want to work to deliver a Reform Ltd government before he retires to his allotment.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Youāre right. But the Truss experiment showed that if you lose the confidence of the markets youāre out. Splashing the cash around like a drunken sailor is the route to penury for all, sadly. Neither the poor or disabled will benefit if the economy falls of a cliff.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
And you think that a Farage government would be good for the country.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
So do I. I also want a functioning economy where we can afford to pay benefits.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Youāre right. Starmer still has time to recover but Corbyn seems determined to prevent that.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. Starmer has to at least promise a vote on PR before itās too late and we get stuck with Farage.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Iāve just reported facts. Corbyn seems intent on delivering us a right wing government and heās going to crown his career by giving us Nigel Farage.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Thatās right. The choice next election is Starmer or Farage. A vote against Starmer is a vote for Farage.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
I donāt think that wanting to avoid a Reform Ltd government is a despicable opinion. You may disagree - after all, Jeremy Corbyn has managed to deliver us Brexit, Boris Johnson and now heās going for the hat trick of working to bring us Nigel Farage.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Iām a realist. If you think that a Reform Ltd government would be better for resident doctors than go ahead and undermine Labour to your heartās content.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
The only reason they want to rebalance to 2008 is that they had enjoyed several years of real terms increases under [checks notes] a Labour government.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Great way to spook the markets and cause a run on the pound.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
14 years of Tory cuts cannot be reversed in a year. If resident doctors havenāt had their pay restored by 2032 Iāll be with them on the barricades. But itās naive to expect everything to be put right in year one.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
They need to understand that most of the workforce is also earning less in real terms than in 2008.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Did they not get an immediate raise last year?
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
If resident doctors thought that their 15 years of pay cuts could be restored in a single year Iām not sure what to say.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks for your contribution. Do you have anything positive to say?
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Should everyoneās lost pay be restored?
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Well Iām well informed rather than having any particular expertise, but it seems to me as if Netanyahu made a huge miscalculation in not limiting himself to a proportionate response to the October 7th outrage. It appears that Hamas gave him the excuse that he was looking for. Maybe they knew that.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
It seems that the situation in Gaza is so bad that some countries which would have been reticent have been pushed over the line. Anti Israel sentiment appears to be growing even in the USA which is basically unprecedented.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
It could be either or both but itās a step in the right direction.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
The idea is to coordinate with France and hopefully others at the UN. This isnāt the moment for grandstanding.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
The question isnāt whether itās technically possible. Itās about what happens when they have to convert a āprivateā AF1 at the same time as the legit ones.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
The AF1 refresh is a multi year long project. I can't imagine that they would have any of that bespoke tech just on the shelf for a potential third plane.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
[shudders]
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
There is also an acute shortage of people who are qualified to do the work and have the appropriate security clearances so they can effectively name their price. The only way that work on this aircraft can happen at all is if work on the other two aircraft is paused.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Because it will have all kinds of extremely expensive and extremely classified tech on board in order to keep the President safe. As there are already two new AF1s in preparation this will have to be sourced and the aircraft will need to be stripped back to bare metal for it to be installed.

Itās not how democracy is meant to work. But itās how it is working in the UK in 2025.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
The choice at the next election is between Starmer or Farage. If you vote against one you get the other.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
A vote against Labour is a vote for Farage. Donāt say you werenāt warned.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
At the next election we have the choice between shit and existential. We can recover from shit. If you vote for perfect you will get existential. Donāt say you werenāt warned š
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Attacking your allies isnāt a good look. Just saying.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent

Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Fine. When Farage gets elected weāll know who to thank š
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Itās not how democracy should work.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
A vote against Starmer is a vote for Farage.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree. Itās a bonkers strategy. But you either get Starmer or Farage. A vote against Starmer is a vote for Farage.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
āOops. Farage is in Downing Street. We aimed for a coalition so itās not our faultā.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Good luck in engineering that.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Starmer has been a disappointment but the alternative is Farage. Itās one or the other.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Here in the UK we currently have First Past the Post. Corbyn has spent his life trying to ensure that we have a Conservative government by continually trying to split the left wing vote. Now heās working on behalf of Farage.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Farage is likely to get in by default thanks to Corbyn's efforts.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Iām surprised that a Reform Ltd supporter has heard of Einstein. He was a refugee, you know.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
So your remedy is to give it to someone with no experience and who cannot even mange 4 MPs without two of them flouncing off.

Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
I disagree. What youāll find is that AVs will have to drive like little old ladies until such time as there are no human drivers. I happen to think that we are decades away from widespread AV adoption
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
People donāt expect computers to make mistakes and so I would suggest that no deaths caused by AVs would be acceptable.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
It seems to me that Musk is now in a no win situation. If he crawls back to Trump is reputation will never recover. If he starts attacking Trump his companies will get destroyed. The only chance he has got is to completely withdraw from public life and hope everyone forgets.

No room for complacency but opinion polls are not the same as turnout on election day when a Reform Ltd government is a real possibility.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
Given whatās happened I think they can wave goodbye to being reelected because they deserve it. The best they can hope for now is being reelected because they are not Farage.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
The article confuses lithium ion and LFP. LFP is used because it is much more chemically stable and a much lower risk of thermal runaway. The idea that batteries have to be replaced every few years is also just plain wrong. Every 20 years perhaps.

There is one small upside. It will give us something to trade away in exchange for further concessions from the EU. In the short term itāll be shite but thatās Brexit in a nutshell š¤·š¼āāļø
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
That's probably a better headline for Starmer than 'The UK government is an absolute pleasure to negotiate with as they agree to anything we suggest'.
Andy Gowers (@exbox.bsky.social) reply parent
We did rather flounce off, telling the EU that we could do better. It's no surprise that they would drive a hard bargain if we indicate that we've changed our minds.
