The hard part is that itās more of a gradient when you look at worldwide console release dates. Then you throw in these sort of half generations like the early 32-bit consoles and pc gamesā¦ generations can be good nuff for conversation if theyāre thought of as eras.

Thatās the VROOOM engine, originally from ST/Amiga. Itās brilliant. It combines faked road tricks with polygon off to the side. Like I think the road works more like Test Drive than anything. Then on Genesis they can use the column scroll to tilt the screen and really drive home the illusion.
This is a pretty decent Hang On-inspired game for the C64. Itās a bit easy and quirky but has a whole lot of 8-bit charm

This is a weird one: The crew who did the awesome Battle Wheels then started writing an FPS game on the same engine. It is odd because itās a mission based game that takes place in a wide open field. I never quite got into this one. This is a very late release by Songbird. #atarilynx

NTSC Stunt Car Racer, retitled to Stunt Track Racer. The manual is quite neat, too, with an entire history of auto racing which veers off at the end into this mythical stunt racing league.

Yeah, it certainly doesnāt happen overnight. It will always be a years, decades-long process if the goal is to be able to write in a large span of genres.

One of my favorite beat em ups if not my absolute top one. Donāt forget you can make the flamethrower if you pick up the lighter before you get the spray can! I played this at the arcade a ton.

Itās random game Saturday! I imported Triggerheart Exelica, the penultimate official Dreamcast game, upon release in 2007. Grabbing enemies to fling is a fun mechanic that differentiates it from other DC shooters and that first stage music is forever lodged in my mind, so I rather like this one.

Happy #RandomGameSaturday! Hereās Alien Brigade, a rip off of Operation Wolf for the Atari 7800 with an alien twist. It plays very well, especially with a light gun (recommended: Sega Master System gun with adaptor). QRT: Mr Driller is great. Always happy to see more of that series.

I think one problem too is that there are now quite a few retro 90s racers. Differentiating itself either way is going to be a PITA. Screamer is weird. First one tries to be Daytona. Second one tries to be Sega Rally. This one is.. inertial drift? Iāll see how it turns out.

How do you feel about the drifting? It seems much less a drift game than Daytona or Ridge Racerā I donāt think long drifts are desirable in this.

AMA about C coding. Iāve programmed a few game engines in it and there are some good organization strategies. But yeah you need headers for each module (this is whatās āpublicā), and make isnāt a bad way to go. An IDE will usually have their own build system thatās simpler to use than make though.

I actually like a little motion smoothing on a large HD screen. It has a lot of chop otherwise because it doesnāt fade nicely like a CRT. I find I can track things happening a lot more easily and the association with cheap video goes away after Iām immersed in the movie.
