Running #TTRPG TOTAL for the year: 114 sessions; 60 DM’d, 38 different players; DM’d by 11, 25 co-players, 54 sessions. Systems (11): OSE, 5E, Dragonbane, Black Sword Hack, Vanilla Game, Shifty Louts, Delta Green, Knave, VanillaQuest, DCC, Beyond the Wall. 3 failed sessions this weekend, tho.

I was shocked at first when I came back to the game, found OSR, and discovered B/X (well, Labyrinth Lord, LotFP, & OSE) as the dominant form, as I still had the "baby-stuff" prejudice. I have since grown to appreciate the ready-to-play lingua franca and the ease of memorizing most of the ruleset.
I was one of those nerd kids who was adamant about segregating the rulesets, putting away Moldvay for good in 1982 (it was my introduction in 1981) as "kid stuff," and wrestling with the 1E PHB & DMG for the next decade.

There's a *single* encounter where a party could recover 18 +1 shields, 18 +1 chainmails, 18 +1 daggers & shortswords each, plus 3 more +2 armors, a +3 armor, 4 +3 weapons and a +2 weapon, as well as a wand and ring of protection +3.
This "In earlier versions of Dungeons & Dragons (Original D&D, B/X, and AD&D 1st/2nd Edition), magic items were actually unique and rare, had no expectation of being part of standard character progression." is just untrue. *Against the Giants* has 2! Rings of Three Wishes and a Wish scroll alone.

I can't recommend overall, though creepiness of greeting NPC and the process of his poisoning the PCs is fantastic. Most of that and the lore dumps are just not actionable to help win the concluding conflict, and the final puzzle is on the level of the ones that blighted *Rime of the Frost Maiden*.
7th encounter: Final battle. Stages, fairly interesting battlefield & choices. Half the team (down to 4 PCs) died in final conflict, though unlucky with crits & fumbles. Players were very good investigators and w/social interaction, but 2/3 were new to DCC combat system. (Plus many distractions.)
5th encounter: Unsolvable puzzle + trap + potential combat + slim social chance/reveal. Players attempted two novel solutions. 6th encounter: Puzzle & combat + social literal gatekeeping that is awkward in play. ("No you mustn't release ancient evil, but here is a poem puzzle to solve to do so.")
There's a little bit of path choice (skip a few rooms) going up a tower, and none going down. 3rd encounter: reveal + 2 infodumps. Bit long for revealing non-useful background & setting for big puzzle, but no real clues. 4th encounter: Simple combat + infodump + v. secret magic item (no clues).
Very good 1st encounter. It's trap + social + exploration + potential combat with NPC. A little weakness in room: bad false path shown, very difficult secret door gating off finale, and NPC's material set up a little nonsensical. 2nd encounter good, as well: horror + investigation + reveal.
Backstory: too long & not integrated enough from player side (I simplified to 3 sentences). Overall, there's a little too much combat (esp. for a one-shot) and a big centerpiece puzzle that's too gamey. One good player-facing opening telegraph about upcoming dangers. Entry trap not telegraphed.
"TDLoCW" is free teaser adventure to get folks excited about coming Castle Whiterock kickstarter. It doesn't seem to have a whole lot of connection to the Megadungeon (not a lead-in, but rather a side-quest). The following review absolves the module of any problems caused by my GMing errors.
