Thanks, yeah we wanted a way to have summer covid cautious hangouts. Had to cancel or reschedule a few due to bad weather or wildfire smoke, deal with outside noises (including our dog) but overall have been great.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
That’s awesome! We started doing backyard summer movies a few years ago when we moved into this house and can’t fit more than 20 people but it’s been so fun.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
That’s extra cool.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Fuck yeah! I love her dress and everything about that photo. 💜❄️
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Oh hi! Yup, for a couple years :)
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Perfect.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Nope, I'm in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada). And I water every day (except for the very rainy days).
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Yeah Edmonton is real winter too.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I don't really like kale, but it's still cool :) Our garden boxes are usually covered with snow and ice from October or November- April/May, but I did have a strawberry plant I stuck in the dirt come back to life in May so that was fun. The sage and rosemary I stuck in there too didn't come back.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Impressive!
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Excellent.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Exactly.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Beautiful!
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
That’s annoying, I’m sorry - I had a less successful garden this summer (probably because cool and wet mixed with some hot, and many bugs and creatures eating the stuff).
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Not that I know of, I just use a mix of potting soil and a bit of compost, and usually tend to overwater stuff. The heat might be an issue.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Alberta is calling … other firefighters to help with wildfires.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I’ve had good luck with west coast seeds rainbow blend the last few years for carrots. www.westcoastseeds.com/products/rai...
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com)
Alberta’s climate plan is to light a match, throw it in some crude oil and walk away yelling WE GOT ETHICAL OIL MOTHERFUCKERS while laughing maniacally as the province and world burns.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I’d love to but we only get May-October (and sometimes just June-September) as gardening season here, unless the carrots can also survive months of snow and minus 10-40 degree temps.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Labour (and neighbour) are the British spellings and the ones used in Canada :)
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Those ones are radishes but I did grow beets this year too :)
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Nice.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
We can give excess veggies to food banks and other local non profit orgs here. My garden hasn’t been as successful this year so we’ve eaten most of the stuff but have given some things to friends and neighbours too.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
That sounds amazing, are you able to grow stuff outside during the winter where you are or will it be indoors? We only have about 5 months (if we’re lucky) here for outside gardens.

When you say “covid is over” or refer to the pandemic only in the pastense you make it easy for RFK jr to withhold the vaccines & defund clinics. You make it easy for employers to end paid sick days. When you don’t mask up you make it easy to pass bans. We organize but what you do & say matters too.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Other years, yes to that. This year I did a zucchini experiment (planted in a pot instead of the garden box) and have only grown 3 small zucchinis. And tomato plants aren’t as good this year so have lots of cherry tomatoes but only a few other bigger tomatoes.

Local woman wakes up, celebrates unions and their workers, makes oatmeal.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
It’s definitely nastier the closer you get - on one of our road trips from Edmonton to Vancouver a couple years ago we drove quite close to an active wildfire in Hope and it was scary (even the dog knew something was weird).
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Cathedral Grove, some of my all time favourite trees.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Yeah the recycling plant was especially bad yesterday, the air smells more typically wildfire smoky today (and it’s annoying that I can tell the difference now after years of this).
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Yuck to asthma. My migraines will probably get worse too.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com)
It’s been a cooler and wetter summer than usual in Edmonton but after a week of heatwave, the hazy skies, red sun and poor air quality from wildfires are back.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com)
Get in losers, we’re awakening an ancient curse that will only affect evil humans.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Yum!
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I forget, maybe peaches and cream but I think I picked it too early so there may not be much actual corn.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Excellent! There’s probably at least a few people you know on that cast and crew.

Ok that’s my bad, I did say it was nominated for an Oscar, look at me spreading misinformation. But it should’ve been on the short list for the Oscar, anyway :)

I’ve wanted one for awhile but couldn’t rationalize the 250-300 cost. But at 78, I could!

The sale ends today and they’re open til 5pm, for anyone interested.

Got a $300 Birds of North America dress for $78 at Red Pony Consignment today and it feels like I robbed a (beautifully flowered) bank.

They’re cool centers in the summer and warming ones in the winter … when the AC and heat is working.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I believe that! He’s an excellent writer.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
30-34 degrees Celsius all week (86-95ish Fahrenheit) inside the library, sweaty everything. Broken AC plus heat wave.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Well he is his correct pronoun, and oatmeal is the correct breakfast :)
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I can neither confirm nor deny that statement :)

My history teacher in high school used to list historical figures as dead or NDY (not dead yet).

Every day is bad gut day for me but some are extra bonus bad and today is one of those days. It could be sushi from last night, or any number of other things so oh wells.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com)
It’s a Bad Gut Day but I’m very confident Kind ice cream will help (and even if it doesn’t, I’ll still have delicious ice cream).

I’m not a big Atwood fan but still fully support people reading her books. And I absolutely hate American Psycho (which is included on the recent UCP list even though I can guarantee it has never been in a school library) but also won’t stop people from reading that.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Ruth Wilson is a deliciously evil Mrs Coulter, who is probably my favourite character.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I might add that to her list of nicknames.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Yup. And many kids may not have access to books at home, which is why school and public libraries are so important.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Yup absolutely. And if you read something too advanced at a younger age, the adult bits either don’t register or they are something you can ask questions about or learn from. I’m all for people reading what they want - in whatever format works best for them.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Book banners generally haven’t read most of the books they want to ban.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I’m not super into fantasy but loved that series so much. Dust, daemons, a knife that could cut between worlds - so many great details, not to mention characters and stories.

Atheist authors > Christian authors, in my humble librarian opinion :)
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I haven’t checked holds lists lately (also they keep adding titles, probably from American conservatives) so don’t know but probably not much more than normal.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
The Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig one was terrible but luckily did so badly at the box office that they didn’t make the other two. The more recent HBO/BBC miniseries was excellent.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Most of the books on the recent list are already available at public libraries.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I have done some interviews since then but still don’t love it … I’m a bit too stream of consciousness for interviews.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Anyways, banning books is pointless and you should read His Dark Materials, if you haven’t already. And any other banned books you want to.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
Might have been!
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
At the very least, good to know what you’re being interviewed for (and could be edited to fit their narrative).
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
I probably should’ve done some media training prior to that but I definitely learned from my mistake.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
That was definitely part of it! Being teen services librarian in Red Deer for 5 years played a big role (and my artist friend gave me the name feisty librarian around then too :)
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com) reply parent
me saying “I could see how some people might have a problem with the books”, not the part where I went on to say “but that’s no reason to ban them and kids/ parents can decide if they want to read them”. I learned about speaking in sound bites to media after that.
Jen the Feisty Librarian (@feistywaters.com)
Every recent book banning reminds me of the time in Red Deer in 2006 when Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy was being challenged by the Catholic school division and the news channel interviewed a few people including me (who loves His Dark Materials) but the only clip they played was

The maddening thing is that we know EXACTLY how to prevent this. Yes, kids should get vaccinated, test, stay home when sick, mask as much as possible. But even without any of that: Better ventilation and filtration in schools can MASSIVELY reduce viral spread, for all sorts of respiratory diseases.
