Right, that’s exactly it, it’s mostly a very fast, sort of clever search engine. But when I use a search engine, I know that I’m gonna get some results from dingbats as well as useful information. This abstracts the search, and the name gives the results authority that they don’t deserve.

I have to admit that I know nothing about Aramaic or how common a name Judas was (or even if it’s Aramaic). But I listen to a lot of history podcasts and it’s often that they have to clarify that “it’s not the person ‘X’ that we were discussing a minute ago, but someone else with the same name.”
Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
It was the Aramaic equivalent of “Dave”.

Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s part of the way they’re using it, for sure. It’s a double-entendre using your powerful advocacy for trans rights while using the specter of Xtians as an implied critique of your position.
Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
It is bad about what he said about trans athletes, but a right and a wrong not balancing out is not the same as a right and a wrong making two wrongs.
Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t know anything about that person, or what they support, but lower-case “evangelical” is an adjective used to describe someone who advocates and disseminates an idea or philosophy. A person can be an evangelist of communism, for instance, though nobody would ever use that phrase.

I think they’re referring to the “kikel”, the Yiddish word for circle. It’s what illiterate Jewish immigrants would sign on documents at Elis Island, because they didn’t want to sign with an X, since it looked like a cross. The triangle for Christians, is of course, referring to the Holy Trinity.

Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
That is a very complicated question. Yes, Trump reinstated the federal death penalty the first time he was in office, and killed 13 prisoners. Then Biden commuted the sentences of most prisoners on federal death row. In any case, it’s very rare. It’s easier just to read the Wiki on it.
Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
Death penalty laws are state by state.
Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
We are in California. Technically we still have the death penalty, but nobody has been executed since 2006. There is both a court order against it by the California Supreme Court, and the Governor put a moratorium on it in 2019.

…rightwing organizations like the NRA, and dipshits like Milo Yiannopoulos. Most of the rest of that article (that is, that pertains to the ACLU) seems to be about internal arguments over policy direction for a large civil rights organization. The people he cites are holding one opinion (2/3)
Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
I just read that whole thing. Most of Greenwald’s criticism of the ACLU seems to be directed at Strangio’s comments, which bear on censorship in the private enterprise space. I’m not really into figuring out how the US military can be more effective at fighting wars. Nonetheless, this is an interesting article showing yet again how the US keeps screwing up military interventions.
Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
Also to add, World War II through Viet Nam had the draft. So more upper class and middle class people served in the military, so there was a chance to develop empathy with people who weren’t from the same economic background. Now we just have a de facto draft on the poor.
Cholula Bankhead (@foonhammer.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, I’m kinda pulling this out of my ass; but there was an American economic hegemony. Germany and Japan weren’t competing with US cars, and OPEC wasn’t competing with US oil companies. So they felt more secure, I’d imagine. Also, IRS enforcement was probably a lot stronger.
