I know, I know, but: The president of the US saying, literally, "we're going in" in reference to sending the military to an American city for no reason beyond terrorizing the local population should be the most immediately impeachable shit imaginable

The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
I think there is a strong possibility that when you start with predestination comboed with capitalism, sooner or later you're going to decide that you may as well go all-in on the latter since you can't do much about the former.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
I think you could argue that nearly all religions are inescapably hierarchical and thus very liable to be used to justify abusive hierarchical structures, up to and including slavery.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
You realize that there is an entire academic (not religious) field that studies this? You're under no obligation to agree with the conclusions they reach, but "only superficial readings of small snippets of an imperfect translation are valid" is not an approach that will lead to much understanding.

The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
Not talking about behavior. Talking about the rapid explicit redefinition of religious tenets.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
Historically, usually what you see is either a rejection of a religion or outward piety and virtue while doing evil shit. I'm not sure I can think of a lot of examples of actually explicitly and loudly saying that Christianity writ large is in opposition to the teachings of Jesus.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
Disgree. And this isn't a defense of the history of Christian nations or any particular church. But the way they are using and rapidly rewriting the religion itself is, I think, somewhat distinct.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
What's interesting here is that it ISN'T underneath. It's the rewriting of an entire religion not to cover up malfeasance, but to actually celebrate it.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
Hypocricy and use of religion in general for power/money/oppression isn't new or all that interesting. The fairly recent explicit overt rejection of the basic core of Christianity under the banner of Christianity is new and weird.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
E.g. that's not a great reading of Luke 14:16, partly because English doesn't really have an appropriate word, but also because contextually that's not raccurate. But a lot of other popular "explanations" are complete bullshit -- i.e. the ridiculous rewriting of the camel and eye of a needle thing.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
That's amazing and I love it
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, but critical reading of any text is a thing if you're interested in understanding it, and rejecting a superificial reading of a line isn't an "excuse." That said, I agree that most people are not familiar with the sharper edges of the biblical Jesus.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
Not a red word Christian, got it.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
I think you actually could do it. Obviously wouldn't be linear, but I think you could draw a pretty clear line from Puritanism and predestination through enlightenment thought alllllll the way through Counterculture Christianity and prosperity gospel to the virtually 100% political bizarreness now.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
It would for sure be more fun than the current writing I am months behind on.
The Cassandrasthesiologist, apparently (@fuzzymittens.medsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, I think you could probably make a reasonable argument that this is the inevitable fucked-up end point of relatively unchecked Calvinism if you smoosh Calvinism, buddy Jesus, capitalism, and a solid helping of racism.
