thanks! looks close to the first round of restoration about six months ago but it’s nice that the eye doesn’t land on any smooth spots anymore, that bothered me.

still have trouble with adhesion / color depth on the dye even after four coats; ended up stippling with the sponge in the most stubborn areas, i assume in part because it isn’t real leather. still drying in this pic but overall happy with results. going to cure and then work some balm into it.
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
the big tip for anyone looking to restore some vintage furniture: get a bottle of Howard’s Feed N Wax. a lot of the time when vintage wood looks worn and damaged, it isn’t at all—it’s just dried out. here is the back of the selig chair, before and after applying feed n wax and buffing.
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
grateful to a youtube leather restorer video for that tip. i’ve got to apply a lot of coats of leather dye to restore the color now but i am much happier with the resulting texture from spraying the chip guard at 18-24in and gently knocking it down some with 400 grit sandpaper.
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social)
take two restoring the seat on the selig (eames lounger copy). leather filler can help repair big cracks and damage but restoring the surface texture can be dicey. sanded down the first repair, re-applied filler, then hit it with SEM Chip Guard, an aerosol spray intended for bumper repairs.

honestly i think all that stuff is solid workflow, it’s just the propensity of people to overshade the daylights out of everything. just my personal pet peeve. light still exists! shadows still cast on teeny lil guys!
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
well done, i like the emphasis on color and texture read; the stuff that’s super shaded and lighting-baked-in is not to my taste. i think you’ve done really well here calling out the immense detail in the sculpt without muddying or overworking it. great job

to expand on the last point, Keith Thompson is a very gifted artist whose work we admired, but especially because he presented it alongside evocative story vignettes. for whatever reason that was why i felt like i had permission (funny how that goes) to write little stories for our world.

Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
it did! the inspiration was three parts. FC3’s doing gun descriptions in character voice, John Dolan’s writing as Gary Brecher (The War Nerd) for the character tone itself, and Keith Thompson’s doing story vignettes for his art on his site for the overall world building approach tinyurl.com/ycd5e6xw

i liked alien earth ep4. slowest one yet but not dull, and tv sometimes means piece moving eps. “sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” is arthur c. clarke though, not asimov. odd, easily checked detail to get wrong imo

last time i watched it i was struck by how interesting it was seeing the overt cameron-isms of the script filtered through bigelow’s sensibilties, not unlike the pleasure of watching true romance. i feel like cameron himself wouldn’t have sold the love story so angle as artfully as bigelow.
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
because ultimately isn’t that how we’ve been duped into frittering away our time and attention? celebrities and small gaffes held under scrutiny and culture war football? anything but keeping the targets centered on the billionaires continuing to scoop our entrails out?
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
change is inevitable and companies sliding into irrelevancy are bound to try and figure a new strategy (see also jaguar). i’d much rather have a conversation about the design chops and design decisions than accept an easy target for riffing + ridicule. i’m suspicious about targets served up to me.

and i think it’s human to want to cling to something, any small dumb crap that gives you some measure of comfort these days. maybe it’s ok to be upset about a self consciously old timey style restaurant you liked giving up on its old timey style. that was the whole bit, after all.

wonderful! i've found that detailing rusting/weathering on miniatures has much the same effect. it's so detail oriented and yet so... unstructured? its a very pleasant piece for the viewer i think in the same way as it was to make.

yes, running into modern soda serving sizes, when you haven’t been paying attention to them, is like the last time i was exposed to broadcast tv—oh people do this? on purpose? what is happening
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
i only watched a little of the tv show but i can see why the promise of the premise lent itself to spawning such a long running show, it’s pretty irresistible. honestly i liked the film a lot better than when i saw it in the 90s. a product of its time, mostly in positive ways. healthy cheese.
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
i love all the stuff you don’t see in movies anymore, the big built sets and sweeping sword and sandal epic style giant crowd scenes. the digital visual effects hold up handsomely, and miniature effects, well, emmerich was plainly just getting started.
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
russell and spader are both so incredibly charismatic on screen and photogenic and yet they share long stretches with almost no dialogue and only warm up a little at the end. clear prototype for the revised version (will smith and jeff goldblum). other similar dynamics echo between the films
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
that most famous emmerich is the interesting comparison. the same way cameron would continue to hone his grand theory of how to make the perfect blockbuster (spoilers: the ocean is involved), in stargate you see many of the instincts and plot elements that, pumped up, would make independence day
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
the film taking its time, building up tension and suspense for the big moments and reveals i think really work. the ending is also notably like a sort of first draft for how the finale for independence day works out.
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social) reply parent
it takes us (from a modern perspective) an incredible amount of time to even get through the stargate and then even more to make contact, let alone basically half the film until the villains of the piece show up. it’s by no means sophisticated; these characters are still heroic paper dolls, and yet
Jack Monahan (@gausswerks.bsky.social)
watched Stargate in a fit of pique after realizing i probably hadn’t watched it in close to 25 years. an admirably sound nuts and bolts construction from a different era of craft. roland emmerich’s work would be equated more and more with bombast over time and yet this film feels super old school

i understand gassing up ai’s power and credibility is big business, which accounts for the giant distortion field around it. but this kind of shock and hand wringing about the wacky stuff stuff bots say belies a completely unearned credulity and authority assigned to this tech. this is still ELIZA.
