that’s neat, if i worked pigment into the filler that would be a cool approach for sure. to dot me

thanks! looks close to the first round of restoration about six months ago but it’s nice that the eye doesn’t land on any smooth spots anymore, that bothered me.

still have trouble with adhesion / color depth on the dye even after four coats; ended up stippling with the sponge in the most stubborn areas, i assume in part because it isn’t real leather. still drying in this pic but overall happy with results. going to cure and then work some balm into it.

an eames lounge chair copy freshly reconditioned, shiny black faux leather but you’d say it was real leather, given the quality of the restoration, wouldn’t you?

the big tip for anyone looking to restore some vintage furniture: get a bottle of Howard’s Feed N Wax. a lot of the time when vintage wood looks worn and damaged, it isn’t at all—it’s just dried out. here is the back of the selig chair, before and after applying feed n wax and buffing.

grateful to a youtube leather restorer video for that tip. i’ve got to apply a lot of coats of leather dye to restore the color now but i am much happier with the resulting texture from spraying the chip guard at 18-24in and gently knocking it down some with 400 grit sandpaper.

take two restoring the seat on the selig (eames lounger copy). leather filler can help repair big cracks and damage but restoring the surface texture can be dicey. sanded down the first repair, re-applied filler, then hit it with SEM Chip Guard, an aerosol spray intended for bumper repairs.

excellent week for the founding members of the .357 club in #brigadorkillers. is there an interesting niche i'm not thinking of that's a .357 magnum caliber gun?

to expand on the last point, Keith Thompson is a very gifted artist whose work we admired, but especially because he presented it alongside evocative story vignettes. for whatever reason that was why i felt like i had permission (funny how that goes) to write little stories for our world.

it did! the inspiration was three parts. FC3’s doing gun descriptions in character voice, John Dolan’s writing as Gary Brecher (The War Nerd) for the character tone itself, and Keith Thompson’s doing story vignettes for his art on his site for the overall world building approach tinyurl.com/ycd5e6xw

last time i watched it i was struck by how interesting it was seeing the overt cameron-isms of the script filtered through bigelow’s sensibilties, not unlike the pleasure of watching true romance. i feel like cameron himself wouldn’t have sold the love story so angle as artfully as bigelow.

russell and spader are both so incredibly charismatic on screen and photogenic and yet they share long stretches with almost no dialogue and only warm up a little at the end. clear prototype for the revised version (will smith and jeff goldblum). other similar dynamics echo between the films

that most famous emmerich is the interesting comparison. the same way cameron would continue to hone his grand theory of how to make the perfect blockbuster (spoilers: the ocean is involved), in stargate you see many of the instincts and plot elements that, pumped up, would make independence day

it takes us (from a modern perspective) an incredible amount of time to even get through the stargate and then even more to make contact, let alone basically half the film until the villains of the piece show up. it’s by no means sophisticated; these characters are still heroic paper dolls, and yet

i think if you replace “ask chatgpt” with the phrase “ask the devil” i think it really helps set a more appropriate perspective on the thing

there’s the adage in graphic design: if it’s not working, make it big. if that’s not working make it red. if that doesn’t work make it black and white and red. not too proud to get a splash screen to work:

a stark black, white, and red splash art for Brigador Killers, the logotype (the only color in the image) is a mix of japanese with the title in mixed sans serif and serif font. we see an exosuited soldier in side profile firing an mg42 with a laser sight on it. ejected shells fly across the image and bug muzzle flash.

Borges’ capsule review of KING KONG in which he mostly complains that Kong should be bigger

Film review by Jorge Luis Borges of KING KONG (1933): King Kong: A monkey fourteen meters high (some of his fans say fifteen) is obviously charming, but perhaps that is not enough. This monkey is not full of juice; he is a dried out and dusty contraption with angular, clumsy movements. His only virtue-his height-seems not to have greatly impressed the photographer, who persists in not shooting him from below but from above, a plainly mistaken angle that invalidates and annuls his tallness. It should be added that he is hunchbacked and bowlegged, features that also shorten him. To ensure that there is nothing extraordinary about him, they make him fight monsters far stranger than he and find him lodgings in fake caverns the size of a cathedral, where his hard-won stature is lost. A carnal or romantic love for Miss Fay Wray brings to perfection the ruin of this gorilla and of the film as well.

a seed from the original work that goes on to grow into its own wonderful new thing. appreciating a work and a work that inspired it is like meeting a great friend’s parent for the first time, there is nothing but joy and appreciation and laughter and “oh, of course”

i have been reading borges again and the house of asterion, a story i think i read many years ago but now immediately shocked me as very obviously inspiring a good deal of susanna clarke’s exquisite novel piranesi in the best way. there are derivations but i think the truest inspiration is a seed

yes. he was a true believer / completely shameless military hardware otaku. not sure how you get into submarines otherwise. the belief element though, i think is really hard to maintain in the present era. in a cynical age of self there’d have to be something bigger than the self to believe.

yes, clancy is key especially now. how else to really account for jack ryan spun up again and again until americans remember that gosh, the world out there is a pretty bad place and hey we might have to “torture some folks” but in the end the cia will keep us safe.

i think that’s a great point though doesn’t start or stop with clancy. so many generations of american fed a steady diet of pro cop, pro military, and cia interventionalism media that the disparity and obscenity of some of clancy’s premises never occurred to many people for a long time.
