Cis puberty never asks for permission, you don’t go to the doctor and say “hello, I would like to undergo puberty!” But if a child makes their wants, needs, and fears known, it is callous and cruel to not listen to them. And when maher hand waves it off as “a phase,” that’s exactly what he’s doing.
If a child isn’t old enough to make a decision about their puberty and their future, then they aren’t old enough for us to allow those decisions to be made *for* them. if a child affirmatively asks their parents or medical providers for puberty blockers or hrt, we should listen to the child!
Children do not get to decide what puberty they undergo, and I find that really strange. I wish I got to pick. To me, it seems like if a child is old enough to experience puberty, they’re old enough to decide which set of effects they would rather have. Or at least choose to delay it.
People often say “children aren’t ready to make a decision about their life like that at such a young age!” of course, this contradicts the extensive evidence that children usually do know, but that’s not really my point. Cis puberty is not something that is asked for, consented to, it is forced.
Puberty blockers are also, importantly, shown to leave no lasting effects. If a child changes their mind and decides not to transition (which is quite rare,) they can just stop taking them and undergo cis puberty. No problem. But there’s one other thing about this that I think about a lot.
Being trans, going through puberty is a kind of disturbing experience. traumatic in a lot of ways. you kind of sit and watch helplessly as your body transforms into something you don’t want or understand before your very eyes. i wish i would’ve had puberty blockers to save myself that nightmare.
3. healthcare for trans youth has repeatedly been shown to not only be life saving but also boasts some of the lowest regret rates for any kind of medical interventions. “concerns” about puberty blockers has been greatly overstated by conservatives and moderates hoping to further isolate these kids.
this, of course, is completely contrary to the consensus of the scientific community, to feminist and gender studies academia, and all major medical groups that work around transness. there is a massive market for trans women who want to go conservative, and she’s found it.
her totally unfounded “concerns” about puberty blockers are far from the only instance of this. she is what we in the trans community call a “transmedicalist,” or someone who believes only trans women who have undergone complete, or sometimes partial medical transition are truly women.
2. marci bowers is an interesting source because despite being the first trans woman to perform vaginoplasty and being regarded as an innovator in her field, she is now widely reviled by our community as a person willing to sell out completely and produce pseudoscientific talking points for idiots.
yes, there are functional differences between trans women and cis women in some ways. cis women are fighting to have access to abortions and contraceptives, trans women are fighting to have access to hormone therapy and affirming surgery. we have different needs but we are united as women.
i think people misunderstand that all of us being women means we should all be identical in terms of needs and characteristics. actually, woman is a diverse label even if you don’t include trans women. trans is just an adjective describing a particular fact about my womanhood, in the same way cis is
