I think I also have a lot of (maybe unearned) confidence in my ability to make and sell art. I'm learning to animate this time, and I'm really happy with how it's going and that's fueling a lot of my combat design. But you could also look at that as OH GOD I'VE NEVER ANIMATED OR MADE A COMBAT GAME-
So that's complex. I'm certainly full of anxiety, but that isn't the core of my art. The core of my art is, hmmm. Fascination? Curiousity? I just get so into the idea of making a thing that I can't help it, and somewhere at the other end I sell it. I also do analysis, but curiosity comes first.

I don't get how people don't realize that a technology that replaces junior and entry level positions in a field destroys that field. There's no skipping steps. You have to be a junior before you can be a senior, and if you don't have senior people, you don't have a field.

It might also be that the properties I find most important (balance shifted to favor anticipation and follow through with a focus on expressivity) are just increasingly less present in higher budget more realistic etc etc games, because you see it's not realistic to Look Cool and damn that'd be sad
I wonder if it's something where like, the ability to do high quality animation is inversely proportional to scope, in a way you just can't functionally out-spend? So either you get super lucky with hiring on a large team, or OH WELL and you just try to paper it over with FX work and other assets?
The reason it really stands out for me is animation is also axiomatic to game quality for a bunch of genres. Anything character action, anything high motion kinetic, and poor animation can really mess up the core. And it often is really messed up on big games in a way the money just couldn't cover?
As I do more animation myself, I'm developing a deep appreciation for when it's done well and oddly I see more really solid animation like this from tiny teams? I don't get it! Most other art tasks/etc, oh yeah, high budget game, we can't match that, but animation? There's often no correlation!

Also barns and stuff have multiple levels! It's explorable! Sea floor just has none of that, which they tried to account for with hills? But hills don't blow up the same way, can't be used for cover, etc.
It didn't help that regular missions just aren't as varied. Technically they are, but since we're dealing with "arbitrary sea floor" instead of "Cool Barn" there's just nowhere near as much that they can do to keep it fresh.
