Sunflower about bloom #NorthPond. Natural Light. #EastCoastKin #Photography #BNWmacro #Macro #PhotoHour #ClassicMono #Flowers #FlowersOnSunday #Art #BloomScrolling #thelittlethings #StunDay #ArtInNature #Nature #ArtYear #FineArtPhotography

This is a black-and-white close-up photograph of a flower bud, most likely a sunflower, taken from the side. The image captures the sharp, spiky, and slightly curved bracts (the protective outer parts of the bud) which radiate outward like pointed fingers. Each bract is covered in fine, soft hairs, giving them a slightly fuzzy texture. The light highlights the delicate details of the tiny hairs along the edges, making them glow faintly against the darker background. On the right side, a portion of a large leaf is visible, its veins sharply defined. The background is blurred, fading smoothly from darker at the top to lighter at the bottom, emphasizing the crisp texture and dramatic shapes of the flower bud. The overall feel is striking, detailed, and somewhat dramatic due to the monochrome tones.

A surreal black-and-white infrared photograph of North Pond in Lincoln Park, Chicago. The calm water mirrors the glowing white trees and plants that surround it, their tones transformed by infrared light. The sky is dramatic, with streaking clouds radiating around a bright sun. Logs float quietly in the pond, and in the distance, two tall buildings rise above the treeline, blending city and nature into one dreamlike scene. The image feels otherworldly, ethereal, and peaceful.

#LongTailMacaque in #Monkey Forest. #PhotographersOfBluesky #Photography #Photohour #PhotographersUnited #Eastcoastkin #WildlifePhotography #Primate #AnimalPortrait #Bali #Ubud

This is a close-up photograph of a young monkey, likely taken in the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud, Bali. The baby monkey has wide, curious golden-brown eyes and is holding its tiny hands near its mouth, appearing thoughtful or shy. Its fur is a mix of grayish-brown with a small tuft of darker hair forming a little crest on top of its head. Next to the baby, part of an adult monkey is visible—likely its mother, as you can see her underside with visible nipples, suggesting she is nursing. The background is softly blurred greenery, which makes the monkeys stand out sharply in the frame. The lighting highlights the texture of the fur and the intensity of the baby’s gaze. The species is the long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis), also known as the crab-eating macaque. These monkeys are common in the Monkey Forest in Ubud, where they live in large social groups and interact frequently with tourists.

A #GreenMorayEel ( #GymnothoraxFunebris ) with its cleaning buddy, a #BlueBandedGoby in the Sea of Cortez #FishyFriday #Photohour #photographersofbluesky #Photography #PhotographersUnited #Eastcoastkin #Mutualism #Symbiosis #CleaningStation #MarineBiology #UnderwaterPhotography #LythrypnusDalli

This is a close-up underwater scene. At the center is a large green moray eel, a long, snake-like fish with a wide mouth full of sharp, needle-like teeth. Its skin is smooth and greenish-brown, and its two round eyes look outward. Perched on the side of the eel’s face is a much smaller, brightly colored fish — the blue-banded goby. The goby has a reddish-orange head and upper body, with striking blue and black horizontal stripes running along its lower body and tail. The contrast between the massive, intimidating eel and the tiny, colorful goby creates a dramatic and fascinating image of marine life interaction. The photo captures a cleaning symbiosis. • Moray eel: A large predator that often has parasites or dead tissue around its mouth and skin. • Blue-banded goby (cleaner goby): A small reef fish that eats these parasites and dead tissue. The goby benefits by getting a reliable source of food, while the moray eel benefits by having harmful parasites removed and wounds cleaned. This is a mutualistic relationship because both species gain something positive. What’s fascinating is that during these interactions, predators like moray eels suppress their hunting instincts and allow the tiny goby to work safely, even right inside their mouths!

The image shows a close-up view of the back of a sunflower. The camera is focused on the green fuzzy stem and bracts (the small green leaf-like structures at the base of the flower). You can see the fine white hairs on the stem and sepals, giving it a slightly soft, almost velvety texture. Bright yellow sunflower petals peek out from behind, their tips curling slightly, contrasting against the vivid green. The background is softly blurred, keeping all attention on the intricate details of the sunflower’s structure. Credit: Gregory Rothman 2025

This photo captures a striking moment at N Pond in Chicago. It shows a large wading bird, a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), standing in shallow water. The heron has its wings spread wide, giving a dramatic display of its dark, layered feathers. Its head is bent down toward the water, where it appears to be interacting with or pecking at a leafy branch emerging from the pond. The bird’s tall, slender legs are partially submerged, and you can see small splashes of water around its feet as it moves. In the background, the pond reflects soft green tones from surrounding vegetation, with tall reeds and grasses framing the scene. The overall mood is peaceful yet dynamic, capturing both the grace and energy of this bird in its natural wetland habitat.

The image shows a small heron standing on a slanted tree trunk against a soft blue-green background, likely water. The bird is captured in a crouched, alert posture, with its body low, neck extended forward, and wings slightly lifted as if preparing to strike or take flight. • Its head is dark greenish-black with a sharp, pointed beak. • The neck is rich chestnut brown with lighter streaks running down the front. • The wings are dark gray-black with fine pale lines outlining the feathers. • The legs are slender and yellowish-green, gripping the tree trunk. • Its eye is bright yellow, giving it an intense, focused look. The overall mood suggests the bird is hunting or watching carefully for prey in the water

This image shows a House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), a small, stocky songbird common in urban and rural areas. The bird is perched against a rough, gray stone wall, partially surrounded by long blades of green grass and a fuzzy, curved foxtail grass head. The sparrow has its wings spread wide, showing off the patterned feathers. Its wings are brown with black streaks and pale edging, while its back shows a mix of rufous (reddish-brown), gray, and black markings. The bird’s beak is short and conical, perfect for eating seeds, and it appears to be holding a seed or grass bit in its bill. Its tail is slightly fanned out and points downward. The bird is in a dynamic pose, as if it had just landed or is clinging to the wall while feeding on the grasses growing there. The lighting is bright, highlighting the feather details.

This is a dramatic underwater photograph of a scuba diver exploring a cenote, a natural sinkhole commonly found in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The diver, equipped with full scuba gear, is silhouetted against the dim, ethereal blue light filtering through the water from the cave’s entrance above. Large, jagged limestone boulders dominate the foreground and midground, creating a rugged underwater landscape. The light penetrates unevenly, casting deep shadows in some areas while illuminating others with a mystical turquoise glow. The diver appears small against the vastness of the cavern, emphasizing the scale and mystery of the cenote. The overall atmosphere is both serene and otherworldly — a mix of adventure and ancient stillness, typical of cenote dives where crystal-clear water reveals dramatic cave formations

The spider is a Goldenrod Crab Spider (Misumena vatia), a master of camouflage that waits motionless on flowers to ambush pollinating insects. This is a close-up photograph of a butterfly perched on a yellow wildflower. • The butterfly is shown in sharp detail, with wings folded upright. Its wings are patterned in shades of gray, brown, and pale blue, with darker spots and wavy lines. The underwings have a somewhat mottled, camouflage-like appearance, helping it blend into tree bark or foliage. • The butterfly has large compound eyes, long antennae with orange tips, and a visible proboscis (feeding tube) extended toward the flower. • The flower it is feeding on has bright yellow petals radiating around a cluster of small, tightly packed golden buds at its center. Green stems and leaves surround the blossom. • The background is softly blurred in green tones, making the butterfly and flower stand out sharply in focus. This butterfly is a Hackberry Emperor (Asterocampa celtis), a North American species commonly found in wooded areas near hackberry trees, which serve as host plants for its caterpillars.

The picture shows a large shark with a broad, rounded snout and long pectoral fins swimming close to the camera. Its dorsal fin and pectoral fins are tipped with white, which is how the species gets its name. The shark is swimming calmly in clear, deep blue water. Below it, a freediver with fins, a wetsuit, and a large underwater camera rig is capturing the moment. The diver looks tiny compared to the shark, emphasizing its size and presence in the open ocean. Sunlight filters down from the surface, adding shimmer to the shark’s sleek body. About the Oceanic Whitetip Shark • The oceanic whitetip is a powerful pelagic predator, once considered one of the most common large sharks in the open ocean. • It is known for its long, rounded fins tipped with white, making it easy to identify. • Historically, this shark was incredibly abundant—in the 1960s and 70s, populations were estimated in the tens of millions worldwide. • Due to overfishing and especially the demand for shark fins, populations have suffered catastrophic collapse. • Today, their numbers have declined by more than 90–95% in many regions. In the northwest Atlantic, studies estimate the population is now less than 1% of what it was in the mid-20th century. • The IUCN Red List now classifies the species as Critically Endangered.

They are above the law. They don’t have to either care or understand the constitution. They operate outside of it. Until the high court rightwing realizes what they have allowed to be done to this country, we are in tyranny. This is Germany 1934. Kristallnacht is around the corner.

A bald eagle stands proudly on a gray rock ledge at the edge of a forest. Its striking white head and sharp yellow beak contrast with its dark brown body feathers. The eagle’s piercing gaze is fixed forward as it rests near dense green conifer branches, blending powerfully into its rugged wilderness surroundings.

is image shows a grasshopper perched on the dark center of a yellow wildflower. The insect has a light brown body with greenish-blue highlights on its hind legs and wing covers. Its long, powerful back legs are bent and ready for jumping, while its antennae extend forward. The grasshopper’s large, dark compound eyes dominate its head. The flower it sits on has slightly tattered yellow petals surrounding a dark central disk, and another yellow flower is blurred in the foreground. To the left, a stalk of dried grass leans diagonally across the image. The background is soft and out of focus, painted in muted greens and yellows, which makes the grasshopper and flower stand out sharply.

Rooftop spectator watches a jet fly overhead at the #ChicagoAirshow. Irony & contradiction. More with Image. #WarAndPeace #Spectacle #Violence #Thunderbirds #tech #fundEducation #MilitaryIndustrialComplex #Peace #Duality #Aviation #Photohour #BlueTue #Eastcoastkin#PhotographersofBluesky

From the rooftop, a spectator’s gaze mirrors that of people in cities where such planes do not perform but attack. What we see as spectacle here, others experience as violence. The contradiction is not only in the sky, but in our willingness to forget what these machines, when used for their true purpose, are built to do. This isn’t a great photo, but frames important reflections. Airshows — this one in Chicago — turn weapons of war into entertainment. They showcase an astounding culmination of science and technology, often born from research at leading educational institutions and made possible through partnerships and funding from the U.S. government. Ironically, these are the very things this administration seeks to undermine, even as it celebrates these achievements. Yet we can’t forget: these machines are designed to destroy. I am not so naive as to believe we don’t need them. But neither am I naive enough to think that the money, time, and energy we pour into developing, building, and maintaining them could not be better spent on changing the world for the better — perhaps even eliminating most if not all of the need for their existence. I’ll step down from my soapbox now.

Meet George, a Red Spotted #blenny, Favorite Food: Algae and detritus. Voted most likely to bring a keg to a house party. “I like beer…but not Brett” #BlenniellaChrysospilos #EastCoastKin #PhotographersUnited #PhotographersOfBluesky #Photography #Nature #UnderWaterPhotography #MacroMonday #Photohour

This image shows a close-up of a small, colorful blenny peeking out from a crevice, likely in coral or rock. The blenny has a striking appearance: its face and head are covered in tiny, iridescent spots of red, green, and turquoise, creating a dazzling pattern. Its large, round eyes stand out, each with a reddish hue, giving it an alert and curious expression. Two thin, horn-like appendages rise above its eyes. Its mouth is slightly open, showing tiny, comb-like teeth. The fish looks almost like it’s smiling. The background is dark, making the fish’s vivid colors glow even more. This is a blenny, more specifically a Redspotted Blenny (Blenniella chrysospilos). Blennies are small, often brightly patterned fish that live in rocky crevices or coral holes, just like in the photo. The red and green iridescent spots, the horn-like cirri (little fleshy appendages) above the eyes, and the toothy grin are classic features of this species. They’re usually found in shallow tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, and they spend a lot of time poking their heads out of hiding places, watching for food or predators.

An underwater photograph taken in Bimini captures the underside of a great hammerhead shark. The viewer looks up at the shark’s broad, flat head, with its small mouth open to reveal sharp, triangular teeth. The shark’s pale body contrasts against the deep blue water. Above, faintly visible near the surface, silhouettes of divers hover, watching from a safe distance. This is a black-and-white photograph of a single coneflower. The flower has a dark, spiky, dome-shaped center that contrasts with its soft, drooping petals, which appear pale in the monochrome image. The background is blurred, creating a dreamy, gentle atmosphere that makes the flower the clear focal point. The textures are striking—the sharpness of the cone’s spikes against the smooth, delicate petals gives the photo depth and interest. The overall mood is calm and contemplative. This image shows a close-up photograph of a coneflower (Echinacea). The flower has a prominent, spiky, cone-shaped center that is dark brown at the base and covered in tiny, glowing orange tips, giving it a fiery appearance. Surrounding the cone are long, narrow petals that droop downward gracefully. The petals are soft shades of pinkish-purple, fading toward lighter tones near the edges. The background is softly blurred with a mix of green and yellow hues, which makes the flower stand out sharply in the foreground. The overall effect is dreamy and painterly, with delicate focus that emphasizes the cone while giving the petals a slightly soft, almost ethereal appearance.

Imagine stepping into a secluded pocket of nature where time moves slowly. You’re standing on a ledge of cool, flat stone, the kind that feels solid and slightly rough beneath your fingertips. Ahead, a pond lies so perfectly still that its surface could be mistaken for glass. The water reflects the world above it — every branch, every leaf — so sharply that it’s like peering into an upside-down forest. The air is calm, perhaps carrying the faint earthy scent of damp stone and fresh vegetation. Around you, the trees wear a luminous cloak — not the deep green you expect, but a pale, silvery white that makes them seem touched by frost or moonlight. This surreal glow comes from the way the photograph was taken, using infrared light, which turns familiar foliage into something otherworldly. Somewhere near the pond’s center, lily pads float gently, breaking up the mirrored surface with soft, rounded shapes. Above, fine twigs and sprawling branches reach across the sky — and their reflections double them below, forming an intricate lattice of lines and shapes. It’s a scene that feels both peaceful and slightly enchanted, as though you’ve wandered into a place where nature is quietly holding its breath. Noticed an error. Gregory Rothman @gregoryroth... • 1h A #CoralWhipGoby * - #BryaninopsYongei - pauses for its close up. #ColorOfTheDay #RedWednesday #photooftheday #PhotoHour #PhotographersUnited #photographerofbluesky #photography #macro #underwaterPhotography #nature #Eastcoastkin

This image shows a close-up, underwater macro photograph of a small, slender, bright pinkish-orange/red fish with large, round, dark eyes. The fish is nestled against a branch-like structure covered in soft coral polyps—tiny, white, feathery star-shaped tentacles. The scene is mostly dark, with dramatic lighting illuminating the fish and coral from the front, making the colors pop against the black background. The photographer’s watermark, “©Gregory Rothman 2025,” appears in red at the bottom left corner. The overall effect is intimate and almost otherworldly, capturing fine textures and the delicate interplay of life on a coral reef The whip coral goby (Bryaninops yongei) and wire coral (Cirrhipathes spp.) have a relationship that’s mostly about habitat and camouflage, rather than direct feeding interaction. 1. Shelter & Safety • The whip coral goby spends its entire life on a single coral whip, rarely leaving it. • Its long, slender body matches the coral’s color and shape, making it almost invisible to predators. 2. Feeding Advantage • The coral polyps extend into the water to catch plankton, and the goby hovers nearby to snatch its own tiny prey—mostly zooplankton and small crustaceans—drifting past in the same currents. • This means the coral’s location in nutrient-rich water benefits both species (though the goby isn’t stealing food from the coral). 3. Non-Parasitic Relationship • The goby does not harm the coral; it doesn’t eat the polyps or bore into the skeleton. • In fact, by perching and darting along the whip, the goby might even help by disturbing sediment or algae that could otherwise settle on the coral’s surface. 4. Color Matching • Over time, whip coral gobies tend to develop coloration that closely matches their host coral—pinkish, orange, or brown—further enhancing their camouflage. It’s a beautiful example of commensalism—where one species (the goby) benefits, and the other (the coral) is neither significantly harmed nor helped

Pilsen, Chicago- SENKOE’s “Xōchipilli” blesses the neighborhood. Fuller description if you tap the image. #Graffiti #photography #pictureoftheday #PhotographersUnited #PhotographersofBluesky #Photohour #Eastcoastkin #streetPhotograpy #ArtYear #photooftheday #ColorOtTheDay #BlueTuesday

This image shows a striking, colorful mural painted on the side of a tall, narrow brick building. The building itself is painted a vivid magenta, making the artwork even more eye-catching. The mural, by artist SENKOE, depicts a seated figure holding vibrant marigolds and a bird-of-paradise flower. The person has warm brown skin and wears a turquoise shirt. Their knees are drawn up toward their chest, bare feet resting on a patterned blue base. The figure’s head is adorned with an elaborate, multicolored headdress inspired by Aztec and Mesoamerican iconography—featuring symmetrical geometric designs, stylized feathers, and circular elements. The headpiece covers the upper part of their face like a ceremonial mask. Around the figure, brilliantly painted birds hover—some mid-flight—adding a sense of liveliness and connection to nature. Symbolism: • Xōchipilli, the Aztec god represented here, is associated with flowers, art, beauty, dance, love, and the pleasures of life. His name means “Flower Prince” in Nahuatl. • The flowers symbolize vitality, creativity, and life’s fleeting beauty. • The birds often represent freedom, the soul, and the link between the earthly and spiritual realms. • The vivid colors reflect joy, energy, and the sacredness of natural beauty. • The cross-legged, grounded posture suggests meditation, harmony, and being rooted in the earth while connected to the divine. The overall work blends traditional Indigenous Mexican imagery with a contemporary street art style, turning the building into a monumental altar to culture, nature, and creativity. If you’d like, I can also explain the cultural and historical significance of Xōchipilli in detail so the mural’s meaning is even richer.
