Also, don't lie to kids. The older students will always tell them the truth anyway. My first grader (now 16) never believed there was a fucking "lion" loose. He asked other kids and then us and then he stopped trusting teachers.
If it at all helps, my book is in stores 9/2. I really, REALLY don't care about the $ of selling. I just want to help kids, parents, teachers, caregivers find some peace, and I want to make the rest of the country wake the F up. Minneapolis is my hometown. The shooter graduated my high school.
I am so sorry for you, for him, for our kids. My oldest (now a high school junior) was told in 7th grade to "run, hide, fight." And they told him how to use his school-issued iPad as a weapon. Do you know what he said to me? "I'll fight until they shoot me in the face!"
This book was originally called “When Breathing Is Too Loud,” because as @jeannette116.bsky.social says, our kids are being trained that their voices? Their cries? Their breathes? Are too loud to keep them safe! WTF people?
But until we pass common sense gun laws, I want anxious children to feel seen. I fucking cracked during tornado drills as a kid but I BROKE when my kids had active shooter drills. When will it be enough? It’s already too much.
An agent and editor championed this book — this PICTURE BOOK — that DARES to say the thing out loud: we don’t have to live like this.
Your kid is anxious about the drills! Or their teachers are! Or their friends are! Parents scared? Kids are scared! Can’t read this? LIVE IT!
This is why I had to write a picture book about active shooter drills that so many editors refused to touch. “My kid isn’t anxious about drills” “This will scare too many parents” “I can’t read this” are the passes we got. Guess what?

Exactly. Growing up with tornado drills in Mpls -- where I spent the entire drill in an anxiety spiral imagining what would happen if a tornado took my house or school -- was bad enough. But this?
Because it's needed in our broken world:
If we had commonsense gun laws, I wouldn't have had to write a picture book about anxious kids dealing with active shooter drills. But we don't have those laws, so I did, and now we call.
