I have a sort of synaesthesia thing for singing voices and food. I can't quite explain it, but Tunde Baiyewu's voice from The Lighthouse Family tastes deep-fried.

so much of it is also deeply classist

I was thinking this too. our institutional tools for suppressing abusive behaviours are very blunt instruments. perhaps this reinforces a tendency to assess more and more domains of activity in moral terms.

there's been too much hype about A.I. emulating human activity but not enough about philosophers trying their best to sound like a race of killer robots

not sure whether to celebrate something that's probably just a bureaucratic formality which I feel I didn't do anything to earn (except agreeing to give a guest lecture) but which nonetheless gives me a fancy sounding title

as the pieces are 30 years apart, I've always found it a nice comparison of modern and postmodern approaches to musical ontology—Schulhoff's "in futurum" is notated to emphasise the expressive quality of the silence itself, whereas Cage's 4'33" uses silence to emphasise the contingent ambient sounds
Hane (@hane.bsky.social) reply parent
one of the most hipster things my wife and I ever did was include 4'33" in the music for our wedding ceremony

thank you for this. also I assume that in order for this to actually save any money they'd also have to spread their resources much more thinly across the increased number of students

how are these expansions to be understood in view of the redundancies and course closures we've been seeing in other UK universities? I'm struggling to see how they'd be able to sustain it given the financial crisis in higher education.

Sellars first mentions the "logical space of reasons" in Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind, §36. as far as I'm aware, the "realm of law" is from John McDowell's reading of Sellars in Mind and World

if it wasn't historically impossible, I'd say that William Byrd was inspired by Ravi Shankar's tour of Europe in 1956
Hane (@hane.bsky.social)
I'm convinced that The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" (1965) must have somehow been influenced by William Byrd's "The Woods So Wild" (1590) — same time signature, same melodic motif at 1:48, same open fifth drone, same mixolydian mode harmonies, "this *bird* has flown", etc. youtu.be/JFCmrJ_wo7A?...

... I'm thinking of Smith's moral sentiments, Hume's "slave of the passions", Rousseau's focus on sensibility, Newton's turn to alchemy in reaction to the "atheist" threat of Descartes' mechanical philosophy, & the shift in musical taste away from learned counterpoint toward galant sensibility (2/2)

I've been thinking about how bizarre it is that the Enlightenment gets called the "age of reason", especially as so much of it seems to involve a reaction to the rationalism of the 16th–17th centuries. if anything, it seems more like the "age of sentiment" ... (1/2)
