The founders wrote extensively about this. To Jefferson this was the singular issue, or what makes the core of a functioning Republic. I think Garfield may have pointed us toward a more enlightened society as well, but he would have had many issues to face in house and no time.
I agree the Senate is a highly problematic construct, as smaller (population) states are ripe targets for skewed control. Here Reconstruction, as was done in Germany aft WWII, would have solved the issue. Anything short of that was a failure. Having an ignorant voter base never ends democratically.

That is perhaps one of the greatest problems we face. There is no litmus test for the voter - which in and of itself would be problematic. Perhaps reciting the preamble to the Constitution would serve us better than reciting a pledge, which is distinctly imperialistic.
Republics have the voter put a lot of faith in their officials - thus it is very easy to vote ourselves out of voting rights. Vote buying is another issue that can corrupt any system. In this case we have a lot of apathetic voters without comprehension of a document that serves them.
There is a lot to unpack here - mostly your issue seems more with the structure of the government itself - i.e. Republic vs straight Democracy vs parliamentary. Still, I find any system can and has been corrupted to serve special interests and suppress or manipulate voters throughout history.
