Things which are not the answer: Digging a network of canals in Bournemouth. Last month someone suggested a monorail, so it’s only a matter of time before there are demands to research and build Star Trek matter transporters.

Canals could be the answer AS white vans thunder past schools and supermarkets, and juggernauts clog our streets to deliver salad and screws, I ask: Is this really the best we can do? It's time to reimagine local logistics. I propose a bold, beautiful revival: canals. Not grand industrial waterways of yore, but a clean, quiet network of local canals linking Bournemouth's key supply hubs - from Nuffield to the Triangle, from Castlepoint to Poole Port. Picture barges gliding silently through the town, delivering goods without fumes, noise or potholes. No idling engines, no congestion - just calm, clean motion. Better yet, alongside these eco-arteries: dedicated cycle lanes. Picture a delivery barge flanked by e-cargo bikes and commuters on their way to work. One side carries the town's groceries, the other carries the people who eat them. Sustainable, serene, and shockingly serene. This isn't fantasy - its function with flair. Cities like Utrecht and Paris are already embracing waterborne logistics. Why not Bournemouth? We're a coastal town with a rich maritime heritage. Let's build a future that floats. Replacing lorries with boats and bikes would reduce emissions, ease traffic, and turn every journey into something a little magical. It's the Net Zero future we keep being promised - so let's stop tarmacking paradise and start digging. Less roar, more oar. NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED

On this VJ day I should tell the tale of my Grandad, he served in the Hong Kong Police and spent the duration of the War after the fall of HK in an Internment camp in Stanley. Before it fell he met the Japanese delegation demanding their surrender. He returned to the Hong Kong Police after the war

Picture of a group of Hong Kong Police Officer with my Grandfather sat in the centre. Extract from the Hong Kong Police War diary: The first Japanese Mission with demand to surrender was received. Just gonna state for the record that this is appalling, and the tell it's rooted in bigotry rather than women's safety is that it risks preventing trans men - a group assigned female at birth - from accessing using toilets. It's an unworkable bloody mess, and those pushing it should be ashamed.

Magazine letter: Boffins working on these s0-called 'driverless cars' don't seem to have thought the thing through very well, if you ask me. The roads are already full of cars with drivers in them. To make the situation worse by introducing thousands of cars with nobody in them at all seems like a complete nonsense. And with no drivers to refuel them before the tanks run dry they'll all eventually break down in the traffic. Pastor Carr-Bonhara, Stockport

I used to do Cycling without Age volunteering for Time and Talents in Rotherhithe and actually met a very elderly lady who claimed to remember Dr Alfred Salter when we took a visit to his statue by the Thames

My standard rule is that before anyone is allowed to talk shit about a university's economic role, they have to tell me how many people they think it employs. They're normally wrong by a factor of ten. This should also be the first question to any MP offering thoughts on the topic.

What an amazing ride last nice with the Critical Mass. We rode our bikes through the new Slivertown Tunnel. What a lovely experience.

Yeah, but a number of the old buildings were being actively re-used, Arch Climbing had a decent sized bit that was a bouldering centre nicknamed "The biscuit factory", they're now in another oldish building across the yard (Building One).

Is part of it that you're more of a signpost than a weathervane in the Benn parlance?

This is literally a quote from the satirical comic strip "The Wizard of Id," which focused on a "tyrannical, dwarfish monarch...ruling a rundown and oppressed shabby kingdom." economicsociology.org/2015/08/28/r...

Hammersmith Bridge has finally reopened for both pedestrians and cyclists after being closed for over seven years. Although there was a brief reopening last year, it was short-lived and limited to cyclists only. Now, seeing it fully open again feels great.

SXSW is coming to London from 2-7th June, and its exactly as you might expect: Expensive, AI, NFTs. I propose FKFJ: The exact opposite of SXSW, on the same dates. An distributed affordable community thing across London, about technology, music, and art. No central org. Just put on an event. Yes?
